Stress and dizziness are both common conditions that have their own sets of causes and symptoms, and are seemingly unrelated. However, there are many people who believe that stress can directly cause dizziness, but is there any scientific evidence to back this up? What Are The Types Of Headaches What Type Of Headache Is A Migraine
There are over 150 types of headaches, divided into two categories: primary headaches and secondary headaches. A migraine is a primary headache, meaning that it isnt caused by a different medical condition. Primary headache disorders are clinical diagnoses, meaning theres no blood test or imaging study to diagnose it. A secondary headache is a symptom of another health issue.

When To See A Doctor
Here are a few signs that the dizziness youre dealing with is something worth bringing up with your doctor:
A lot of the time, dizzy spells pass pretty quickly or fade when you address the problem . However, if a dizzy spell doesnt pass, that could be a sign something else might be going on. Constant or long-lasting dizziness is often a sign of a more serious ear disorder or undiagnosed migraines.
Even if it only happens once and doesnt last a long time, its worth seeing a doctor if your dizziness is super intense. Not only could it be a sign that something else is going on, but it also puts you in danger of injuring yourself. Its better to be safe than sorry, says Dr. Cho.
Vertigo can actually be a sign of a stroke, the CDC says. If you feel a spinning dizzy sensation that hits suddenly and also experience any other symptoms of stroke at the same time , you should see a doctor to rule it out. Dr. Cho urges a visit to the emergency room where doctors can do a quick check to make sure.
Some other neurological conditions can cause similar symptoms, so its worth checking with a doctor if youre concerned about those dizzy spells.
Dizziness And The Elderly
Many older people experience dizziness. They feel unsteady while standing, or light-headed. Its more difficult to find a clear in older people, because usually multiple complaints play a role. The most common causes of dizziness at a later age are a poor physical condition, weaker muscles, a worsened sense of balance and poor vision. Medicine can also contribute to the feeling of dizziness, which is a side-effect of certain drugs. This is stated in the package leaflet.
We unfortunately have had to add two common causes to this list in recent years: loneliness and anxiety. Loneliness causes sombreness and depression. The fatigue related to this could lead to a floating feeling or dizziness. Older people who live alone, often worry more.
Minor setbacks in daily life can cause emotions to run high because of anxiety and tension. This can lead to a slower or faster heartbeat, which causes a feeling of light-headedness. If tensions run very high, one can even faint.

Why Do People Get Vertigo
Around 90 per cent of vertigo cases are due to one of the following three conditions:
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo – BPPV occurs when when tiny calcium carbonate crystals break free from their normal location and collect inside the tubes of the inner ear. This is particularly problematic because your inner ear sends signals to the brain and body about head movements and which in turn helps us balance. BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo and typically results in short episodes that last anything from a few seconds to a few minutes. There is no known reason why you may suffer from BPPV although age may be a factor.
- Labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis – an inner ear problem in which swelling and irritation occurs, usually due to a viral infection. This affects the inner ear’s ability to help the body sense balance. For these sufferers, vertigo can come on very suddenly and may go hand in hand with hearing loss.
- Meniereâs disease – this is caused by excess fluid building up in the inner ear and the subsequent changes to pressure in the ear resulting in inflammation. People with Meniereâs disease often experience episodes of vertigo that are more intense and longer lasting than in the previous causes. It can also bring on a ringing in the ears , blocked ears and hearing loss. Meniere’s does not have a known cause but, as with labrynthitis, there is a link to viral infections in the inner ear, as well as allergies and head injuries and genetic conditions.
Does Ibuprofen Help Vertigo
In some cases, the doctor may determine the vertigo is being caused by an infection, which can result in labyrinthitis, a swelling of the inner ear. This swelling causes vertigo, but the treatment course will be slightly different: most often non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen.

The Anxiety Vertigo Connection
Unfortunately, the very nature of vertigo predisposes us to anxiety and panic. Syn Etc, my fellow Menieres blogger explains:
Vertigo is terrifying because it dislocates our sense of space. One of my favorite psychology professors said that balance is our 6th sense. Whenever we lose any of our senses our reaction is fear because we are no longer getting all the information we expect to. Vertigo puts an extra spin on things because it feeds us incorrect information. Without that data it is difficult to make decisions, and to have confidence in them. Anxiety is the emotional byproduct of uncertainty.
The bigger problem is that its a negative feedback loop. The vertigo causes intense panic and anxiety, which in turn causes the vertigo to get worse, and happen more frequently. It can be difficult to break the cycle.
But because the two are so closely intertwined, the good news is that if you can start to get your anxiety under control, your vertigo will start to improve as well, or at the at the very least, you will be able to handle it much more effectively.

One of the biggest problems is that the fear of having a vertigo attack can be enough to cause anxiety and possibly even trigger a panic. It can make it hard to enjoy the things you used to enjoy doing. It can make it hard to even leave the house.

Other Causes Of Sudden Vertigo While Driving
BVD is not the only cause of driving vertigo. Many people experience dizziness as a symptom of acrophoba, AKA the fear of heights.
About 2-5% of the general population has acrophobia. That feeling of spinning is common in people afraid of heights. An example is someone who gets vertigo while driving over bridges.
This height vertigo is not technically vertigo, even though its often called that. True vertigo only has medical causes. Causes of vertigo like acrophobia and claustrophobia are psychological in nature, not medical.
Effective treatment for psychological vertigo like fear of heights includes:
- Relaxation You can cope with some stressors on your own via deep breathing and mindfulness techniques. Hypnosis for driving anxiety is also an effective treatment. Theres a lot of self-help hypnosis sessions available at
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT is a short-term form of psychotherapy. Its considered the most effective therapy at overcoming anxiety-induced vertigo.
- Medication Anxiety medication is sometimes appropriate for relief of vertigo. Only take medication under the care of a prescribing healthcare professional.
- Exposure Therapy The concept in exposure therapy is that confronting your fear is the best way to get over it. Exposure therapy includes gradual, increasing levels of exposure to the causes of your anxiety. Over time, this decreases your sensitivity to them.
Dizzy Spells May Be Caused By An Inner Ear Problem
One of the most surprising causes of dizziness is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV, says Gregory Whitman, MD, an ear and brain specialist with the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Balance and Vestibular Center at Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital in Massachusetts. Your inner ear contains calcium and protein-based sensing crystals called otoconia, says Dr. Whitman. If these crystals are dislodged and float into your inner ears canals, you may have a brief spinning sensation. Its a simple mechanical problem that can and should be corrected with physical therapy, and not with medication or surgery, says Whitman.
Though BPPV is the most common inner earrelated balance disorder, it affects only about 1 out of 1,000 people per year, according to the Vestibular Disorders Association . And while it can affect adults of any age, this type of vertigo primarily affects older adults. Most cases occur for no apparent reason, but BPPV has been linked to trauma, migraines, inner ear infections, diabetes, and osteoporosis. After treatment, 50 percent of patients may experience the problem again within five years especially if it was the result of trauma, say experts at VEDA.

How To Tell If You Have Anxiety Lightheadedness
One of the problems with intense anxiety is that it can be hard to tell the difference between anxiety and a different underlying medical condition. Unfortunately, certain medical conditions might produce symptoms that closely resemble those of an anxiety disorder. For this reason, its important to be seen by a doctor who can rule out possible underlying medical conditions.
How Is Vertigo Treated
Treatment depends on the cause. In most cases vertigo goes away without treatment. Stress can increase symptoms of dizziness and nausea, and reducing stress can help reduce the symptoms.
If symptoms persist see your doctor. They may recommend one of the following treatments:
- Vestibular rehabilitation or balance training this is a type of physical therapy that strengthens the vestibular system.
- Canalith repositioning measures this is useful if the cause is BPPV. The treatment moves calcium deposits out of the canal so they can be absorbed by the body.
- Medicine motion sickness medication can be used to relieve some symptoms of vertigo such as nausea, and antibiotics can treat a bacterial infection. Diuretics, or water pills, may be prescribed to reduce the swelling associated with Menieres disease.
- Surgery surgery is only needed in a few cases.

The Relationship Between Stress And Vertigo
Remenyi says vertigo results from error messages being sent between the ears, eyes, limbs, and brainso any lifestyle factor that leads to fatigue or overwhelm can trigger vertigo.
Heres something to think about: Like an endless loop or vicious cycle, stress influences vertigo as much as vertigo influences stress, according to Remenyi. Vertigo symptoms can make patients feel anxious, stressed, self-critical, or stuck in rigid thinking, and all of those feelings are valid.
In addition, Horowitz says that when were stressed, our hormone cortisol increases, which in turn affects our vestibular system, the part of the brain that controls balance and makes us feel off-kilter, as if were on a boat while grounded.
It may seem as though the relationship between stress and vertigo is clear-cut, but Elrakhawy explains why its a little more nuanced than experts previously thought. He says the stress response is complex, in that it involves various organs and chemical mediators that are secreted at various times depending on the bodys current state.
He cites a few studies that looked into the relationship between the vestibular system and stress, specifically various stress hormones such as cortisol:
So its tough to make a definitive statement on cortisol and the vestibular system, other than to suggest they are related, with future studies needed to show a precise connection, Elrakhawy says.

Feeling Dizzy May Be Related To Anxiety
Many people who experience dizziness, especially people in their twenties, may also have anxiety, says Whitman. They usually dont want to hear that dizziness can be linked to anxiety because it suggests that its all in their heads, he notes. But whats in your head is your brain. And anxiety can reflect a brain function disturbance thats possibly genetic.
Compared with people who dont have anxiety, people with anxiety disorders appear to sway more when subjected to a moving visual environment, Whitman says. And they sway in a way that seems to be synchronized with the visual movement. These people may be abnormally sensitive to visual stimulation, because their dizziness can increase when theyre watching moving objects or walking through a large, bright store, says Whitman.
This is called visual dependence, and little is known about how common it is. We need to develop better tests of visual dependence, and we need laboratory tests for what we now call anxiety disorders, ways Whitman. Its likely that in the future, these disorders will be reclassified, in part, based on genetics.

Even mild dehydration may be why youre feeling dizzy or light-headed, according to the American Heart Association . Dehydration can also cause blood pressure to drop, which can lead to dizzy spells, notes the AHA. Dieting can also result in feelings of dizziness, because some diets cause dehydration, says Dr. Blau. According to the AHA, mild dehydration that follows the loss of just 1 to 2 percent of your body weight can cause dizziness.
Medications To Treat Anxiety And Dizziness
Antidepressants in the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor family can be very helpful for people who have anxiety with dizziness. Antidepressants have been shown to work better when they are used in combination with behavioral therapy and/or physical therapy.
Prescription anti-anxiety medications like benzodiazepines are widely used, but regular use is associated with a high risk for developing a physical and psychological dependence. In addition, dizziness is a side effect of benzodiazepines in some people.
Although medications have their place in treating anxiety and dizziness disorders, in many cases physical therapy and behavioral therapy are as effective than pharmacological treatment options.
