For most people, heart palpitations are a once-in-a-blue-moon occurrence. Others have dozens of these heart flutters a day, sometimes so strong that they feel like a heart attack.

Most palpitations are caused by a harmless hiccup in the heart’s rhythm. A few reflect a problem in the heart or elsewhere in the body.

Could Heart Palpitations Accompanied By Shortness Of Breath Be Serious

Heart palpitations can certainly be associated with shortness of breath, that is, the two symptoms together without a serious condition being present. That usually indicates that the irregularity of the heart rhythm is significant and may signal the need for a more comprehensive evaluation.

In general, the more serious the symptoms, such as lightheadedness, loss of consciousness, chest pain, shortness of breath, the more seriously one needs to take the problem.

If a patient has known heart disease such as a previous myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure , hypertrophic cardiomyopathy , and others, the symptoms of palpitations will require a thorough evaluation.

What Causes Heart Flutters

Pick up any romance novel, and the fluttering heart is sure to be mentioned at least once. Usually its the heart of the heroine, full of love and joy.

In real life, though, a fluttering heart is a far less romantic character. It can be annoying, worrisome, or even risky, depending on its specific cause.

People describe the sensation of heart fluttering in many ways. Sometimes theyll say straight out, It feels like a flutter. Other times, theyll describe their heart as skipping a beat, flipping over in my chest, or a pause. Sometimes the sensations are accompanied by lightheadedness and a strange feeling in the chest.

Clinically, these patients are usually describing premature atrial contractions , premature ventricular contractions , or atrial fibrillation. PACs and PVCs occur when the hearts atria or ventricles contract out of sequence. In both, the affected chamber beats slightly ahead of when its supposed to. This is followed by a longer than normal pause, while the heart rhythm resets itself.

A-fib occurs when the atria quiver in no particular rhythm instead of regularly contracting. It is irregularly irregular.

Questions To Ask Your Doctor

When you talk with your doctor, ask these questions if you think you may have anxiety or AFib.

How To Reduce Heart Palpitations At Home

For the most part, palpitations caused by non-heart related triggers can be treated with simple home remedies.

For example, if you only feel your heart race when youre anxious or stressed, relaxation techniques like meditation and deep breathing could be the key to reducing these palpitations.

Likewise, a thumping heart caused by stimulant use can be calmed by reducing your intake of tobacco products and caffeine. If youre taking any medication, tell your doctor about the palpitations youre experiencing to find out if your medication could be causing them.

Hydration and diet play a big role, too. Being dehydrated or having low levels of potassium can also trigger heart palpitations. If you have low blood sugar, eating too many carbohydrate-rich foods and processed sugars can increase your likelihood of experiencing palpitations.

But it’s a good idea to see a GP if:

  • the palpitations last a long time, do not improve or get worse
  • you have a history of heart problems
  • you’re concerned about the palpitations

To help find the cause, a GP may:

How To Stop Heart Palpitations And Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are two of the key triggers of skipped beats. To avoid palpitations, try meditation, exercise, yoga, or another stress-reducing activity. If palpitations do appear, techniques like the ones described below can help:

  • Deep breathing. Sit quietly and close your eyes. Place one hand on your abdomen and breathe in slowly through your nose. Feel your abdomen move outward. Exhale through your nose or mouth, whichever feels most comfortable. Repeat.

If your hearts racing unexpectedly, you can try to stop it yourself with one of the following maneuvers:

  • Valsalva maneuver. Pinch your nose closed, close your mouth, and try to breathe out forcibly through your nose.
  • Bear down. Clench your stomach muscles and your anal sphincter. Then bear down as if youre having a bowel movement.
  • Cold water. Splash cold water on your face, or immerse your face in a sink or large bowl filled with cold water.

The Valsalva maneuver, bearing down, and cold water stimulate the vagus nerve, which helps control the heart rate. Deep breathing helps relax you and ease the stress and anxiety that can come with palpitations.

If none of these work, have someone drive you to an emergency room or call 911.

Heart Palpitation Risk Depends On The Cause

The most important part of evaluating heart palpitations is determining whats causing them. I always liked to start by asking patients some questions about their lifestyle:

  • Were they eating too much sugar, caffeine, or other foods that cause palpitations?
  • How much stress and anxiety did they have in their lives?
  • Were they feeling emotions that they didnt feel they could talk about?
  • Did their palpitations tend to happen at a certain time?
  • What medications are they on?

The answers to these questions helped me understand whether external issues could be causing the skips, jumps, or flutters. If, after I finished my work-up, all of a patients risk factors fell into this bucket, I didnt worry too much about their heart palpitations. Instead, Id start working with them on adopting new habits that could address the problem.

What concerned me was when I found internal issues with the heart that could be causing someones palpitations, or that could become dangerous if it was combined with palpitations. Here are six specific examples of when its right to worry

What Medications Are Usually Prescribed To Prevent Palpitations

There are a large number of medications that are used by physicians that are used to treat more serious types of heart rhythm disorders. These are usually prescribed by a heart specialist because they do have significant side effects and if not used correctly can cause serious cardiovascular problems, even a cardiac arrest or sudden death.

When used correctly, these powerful medications can prevent serious heart rhythm disorders from occurring and can be quite useful, although most patients would prefer not to be on them because of their cost, side effects, and they often must be taken multiple times a day.

What To Expect At The Doctors

When you go to the doctor to get evaluated for heart palpitations, your general practitioner will likely listen to your heart with a stethoscope. The doctor would be able to detect a palpitation if it occurred, and they would also be able to determine the presence of mitral valve prolapse or a heart murmur in many cases. But the tricky thing is that during the few seconds the doctor is listening, your heart likely wont palpitate.

So, if youre worried about your palpitations, your general practitioner will refer you to a medical specialist in cardiology, or a cardiologist. When you visit the cardiologist, you may get an EKG . An EKG will reveal abnormalities in your heart rhythm. However, its also very likely that an EKG will not reveal anything abnormal, since it is only a 12-second test.

A cardiologist may recommend that you wear a Holter monitor for as short a duration as 24 hours, or as long as a month. When wearing a Holter monitor, you will be asked to press a small button whenever you feel symptoms. You may also be asked to record your symptoms on a sheet of paper. This information is useful because it allows the doctor to read the results of the Holter, and line them up with what you are experiencing.

Does Anxiety Cause Heart Palpitations

Anxious feelings engage your bodys fight-or-flight response. Fight-or-flight triggers a series of events in your body, including the release of certain hormones. Experts believe this response was helpful in ancient civilizations when humans had to fight or run from threats to survive.

Today, your fight-or-flight response works the same as it always has. It just doesnt know the difference between a grizzly bear attack or an upcoming work presentation. So those same hormones like adrenaline kick in to protect you.

The fight-or-flight response speeds up your heart rate, so your body gets more blood flow, explains Dr. Bibawy. The increased blood flow gives you a burst of energy to fight or run from danger. Saturated fat is a major culprit when it comes to heart disease. Eating too much saturated fat drives up cholesterol levels, which facilitates the process of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis describes a buildup of plaque on arterial walls. Plaques are accumulations of cholesterol and other debris in the bloodstream, which then builds up on the sides of blood vessels. The formation of plaques greatly increases the risk of conditions like coronary artery disease. These plaques impeded blood flow, and in some cases, they may break off from the wall of the blood vessel and travel to other parts of the body. About Heart Arrhythmias And Palpitations

Your heart is a vital organ. Its a muscle that pumps blood to all parts of your body. The blood pumped by your heart provides your body with the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function. Normally, this pumping is controlled by your hearts electrical system.

Sometimes, your hearts electrical system may not work properly because of cardiovascular disease, chemicals in your blood or sometimes for no known reason. Changes in your hearts electrical system can cause abnormal heart rhythms called arrhythmias.

Arrhythmias are a disturbed rhythm of your heartbeat. There are many kinds of arrhythmias. Some may cause your heart to skip or add a beat now and again, but have no effect on your general health or ability to lead a normal life.
