Learn How You Can Put a Stop to Panic Attacks From Home in Just 13 Easy Steps!

My very first panic attack was caused by a harmless heart palpitation that led me to overanalyze my heart rhythm to the point of severe anxiety. Afterward, I desperately sought answers regarding the cause of these palpitations. One question I was forced to investigate was, can anxiety cause irregular heartbeat?

Anxiety can absolutely cause an irregular heartbeat. Heart palpitations and arrhythmias are very common and often harmless phenomena that do not require treatment. An irregular heartbeat can also be caused by physical or emotional stress, dietary factors, or drugs like caffeine and nicotine.

For those of us without a medical background, anything seemingly abnormal about our heart rhythm can be terrifying. In this article, I hope to shed some light on the facts about anxiety and irregular heartbeats.

Everything that follows is what I wish someone told me when I experienced heart palpitations and panic attacks for the first time.

Look At Your Actions And Environment

Dr. Hummel says external factors could be causing disruptions in your heart rhythm:

  • Too much caffeine or alcohol
  • Dehydration
  • Pregnancy
  • Eating or exercising

Dr. Hummel advises you make notes of when you experience irregular heartbeats and share this information with your doctor. Remember, not all unusual heart rhythms will require treatment. “Abnormal heartbeats can come and go, especially in young people, states Dr. Hummel.

Learn the top triggers of heart palpitations, plus what to do about each one.

A few weeks ago I thought I was having a heart attack. My morning started out normal: I woke up at my usual hour, feeling what I thought was a little bit of tiredness. But as I went about my morning routine, things grew scary. I broke out in a cold sweat as I brushed my teeth. My skin turned white as paper. And then, scariest of all: my heart was pounding like crazy. As a health writer I know these aren’t textbook signs of a heart attack, but I also know that dangerous cardiovascular events in women can be more subtle than those in men.

Later that day I went to urgent care, but an EKG and blood tests showed nothing out of the ordinary. Turns out my heartbeat went haywire as a result of a side effect from a medication. The technical term for this: heart palpitations, which can be brought on by many things.

When a person says theyre having heart palpitations theyre referring to a sensation of their heart beating differently. Or they may simply have an awareness of their heart beating, explains Shephal Doshi, MD, director of cardiac electrophysiology at Providence Saint Johns Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

Irregular Heartbeat: What You Need To Know + How To Naturally Treat

Can Stress and Anxiety Cause Irregular Heartbeat?

By Christine Ruggeri, CHHC

Each year, millions of people experience irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias. In fact, a recent study found that one in four adult Americans over the age of 40 could develop an irregular heartbeat. This is especially true for people with coronary heart diseaseor for those under constant stress.

Most cases of a fluttering feeling in the chest are harmless, but some cardiac arrhythmias are extremely dangerous and require immediate treatment. Its important to be aware of the risk factors for an irregular heartbeat and the natural, non-invasive ways in which you can treat arrhythmias.

What Does A Heart Palpitation Feel Like

A heart palpitation creates very strange sensations. Heart palpitations commonly feel like your heart has skipped a beat or is fluttering or pounding. A palpitation may feel a little different for everyone, though generally, the symptoms make you hyper-aware of the beating of your heart.

Some people experience palpitations on occasion, while other people have them very often. Lets dive right into reasons you might experience heart palpitations.

Detecting The Underlying Cause

If you experience frequent or troubling heart palpitations symptoms, your doctor may evaluate the cause by running tests including:

  • Holter monitor: This is a test where you wear a portable ECG for 24 to 72 hours that captures the activity of your heart the whole time. It records episodes of arrhythmia and heart palpitations.
  • Event monitor: This test involves wearing a device for several weeks that records the activity of your heart. When you feel heart palpitations or other heart symptoms, you push a button and the device records what your heart is doing at that time.
  • Electrocardiogram : Many people are familiar with this test at the doctor’s office. A series of electrodes are placed on the chest and other areas of the body to record the heart’s rhythm.
  • Echocardiogram: During this test, the technician uses a probe that uses sound waves to image the function of the heart. An electrocardiogram is used to show blood flow through the heart and to analyze heart structures.

Palpitations Of The Heart

Palpitations are a sensation or awareness of your heart beating. They may feel like your heart is racing, thumping or skipping beats. Almost everyone has had palpitations at some time in their life. They are usually associated with an abnormal heart rhythm .

Palpitations may have no obvious cause, but can be triggered by:

  • physical activity
  • nicotine
  • illicit substances.

An occasional palpitation that does not affect your general health is not usually something to worry about. However, see your doctor if you have more frequent or consistent palpitations, which may be associated with a serious arrhythmia.

Keep Your Diet Low In Saturated Fat

Cast out irregular heartbeat stress anxiety

Saturated fat is a major culprit when it comes to heart disease. Eating too much saturated fat drives up cholesterol levels, which facilitates the process of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis describes a buildup of plaque on arterial walls. Plaques are accumulations of cholesterol and other debris in the bloodstream, which then builds up on the sides of blood vessels. The formation of plaques greatly increases the risk of conditions like coronary artery disease. These plaques impeded blood flow, and in some cases, they may break off from the wall of the blood vessel and travel to other parts of the body. These plaques can then form blockages in the heart, brain, and lungs, leading to very serious and potentially life-threatening symptoms.

So, how can you limit saturated fat in your diet? You can limit saturated fat in your diet by avoiding fatty cuts of meat and whole dairy products, such as cream, cheese, and whole milk.

What Are The Types Of Arrhythmias

  • Tachycardia: A fast heart rhythm with a rate of more than 100 beats per minute.
  • Bradycardia: A slow heart rhythm with a rate below 60 beats per minute.
  • Supraventricular arrhythmias: Arrhythmias that begin in the atria . Supra means above ventricular refers to the lower chambers of the heart, or ventricles.
  • Ventricular arrhythmias: Arrhythmias that begin in the ventricles .
  • Bradyarrhythmias: Slow heart rhythms that may be caused by disease in the hearts conduction system, such as the sinoatrial node, atrioventricular node or His-Purkinje network.

Reasons Your Heart Just Skipped A Beat And When To Worry

Has your heart ever felt like it was fluttering, throbbing, pounding or skipping a beat? That feeling is called a heart palpitation.

Generally, heart palpitations aren’t life threatening. Infrequent palpitations and palpitations only lasting a few seconds usually don’t need further evaluation. However, there are instances where a dysrhythmia, or an abnormal heart beat, can be a cause for concern. Here are some ways to tell if the heart beat in your chest is normal, or not.

Detect Heart Irregularities During Your Day

Besides a visit to the doctor’s office, you can now also get notified if you have an irregular heartbeat just by looking at your wrist. Apple, in partnership with Stanford Medicine, released an Apple Heart Study app which they hope will empower people to take control of their health.

The app uses the Apple Watch’s special technology to measure heart rate and blood flow through someone’s wrist. It will notify users if it senses an irregular heartbeat from AFib. The person can then connect directly with a physician either over the phone or on video conference to determine any next steps. Participants might be sent an EKG patch for additional monitoring, and can expect a follow-up meeting with the study coordinator.

While the app is currently available to anyone living in the US who is at least 22 years old and also owns an Apple Watch, Series 1 or newer, itfs not yet FDA approved for the diagnosis of any heart condition.

Whether you track your heart rate using an app or an EKG, it’s important to understand what can trigger a palpitation in the first place.

Pay Attention To Your Heartbeat

Can Stress and Anxiety Cause Irregular Heartbeat?

People say, My heart skipped a beat, when theyre scared or excited. But an irregular heartbeat is actually much more common than youd think. An irregular heartbeat is called an arrhythmia, says Dr. Pugazhendhi Vijayaraman, cardiac electrophysiologist and director of cardiac electrophysiology at Geisinger Northeast. There are many different types, which can be temporary or permanent. Often, arrhythmias are harmless however, if you feel a persistent irregular heartbeat, see a doctor. One type of arrhythmia, a premature ventricular contraction, or PVC, is the most common type of irregular heartbeat. A PVC happens when the heart beats too early, which causes a stronger second beat. This causes a fluttering or pounding sensation in the chest. Most people have at least one PVC every day, and many dont even notice it. Things like caffeine, alcohol and stress can cause small, temporary arrhythmias like PVCs. But there are factors that can cause permanent arrhythmias, too. Here are four potential causes of a persistent, irregular heartbeat:

  • Heart surgeryHeart surgery is a life-saving operationit can remove clots and help you get your life back. But, operating on the heart can change the way the heart works, including the way your heart beats. Heart surgery can increase your risk of arrhythmias, so your doctors will often monitor your heart after surgery.

    Tachycardia Can Cause Anxiety

Abnormal heart rhythms of more than 100 beats per minute that come from the upper heart chambers are called supraventricular tachycardias . These can occur in healthy hearts as well as in people who’ve had prior heart injuries or problems. In most people, SVTs are random events not triggered by exercise or other activities. SVTs cause symptoms of heart palpitations, lightheadedness, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and, at times, they may cause you to pass out. The mind responds and can cause further symptoms of anxiety and panic.

Most of the time, I encounter people who’ve had anxiety for a few years and for whom medications haven’t worked which prompted their doctors to look for additional potential causes.

    Conventional Treatment For Irregular Heartbeat

If you experience dizziness, chest pain or fainting due to an arrhythmia, you may need to be treated. In order to diagnose an irregular heartbeat, a doctor listens to the rate and rhythm of your heart and for a heart murmur, an extra or unusual sound during the heartbeat. Your doctor may also check for swelling in your legs and feet because this can be a sign of heart failure. The most common test used to diagnose arrhythmias is an electrocardiogram . An EKG detects and records the hearts electrical activity. It can measure the strength and timing of electrical signals as they pass through each part of the heart.

Once youre diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia, your doctor will guide you to choose an appropriate treatment plan. Conventional treatments for an irregular heartbeat may include medications, medical procedures and surgery.

    Medications

    Procedures

Irregular heartbeat can be treated with a pacemaker, a device thats placed under the skin of the chest or abdomen to help control an abnormal heart rhythm. When the pacemaker detects an abnormal heart rhythm, it sends an electrical pulse to make the heart beat at a normal rate again. Doctors recommend a pacemaker when the heartbeat is slower than normal. This can happen as a result of aging, damage to the heart from a heart attack or other heart conditions that affect its electrical activity.

Some groups of people are at higher risk than others. Women who are menstruating, perimenopausal or pregnant may have a higher risk of experiencing heart palpitations because of hormonal changes.

Other groups at higher risk include people who:

    • Experience regular panic or anxiety attacks.
    • Take medications like thyroid pills or stimulants like caffeine and diet pills.
    • Have an existing medical condition such as an overactive thyroid or a heart condition.

    Types Of Ventricular Arrhythmias

A ventricular arrhythmia begins in the hearts ventricles.

    Types of ventricular arrhythmias include:

    Premature ventricular contractions

Early, extra heartbeats that originate in the ventricles. Most of the time, PVCs dont cause any symptoms or require treatment. This type of arrhythmia is common and can be related to stress, too much caffeine or nicotine, or exercise. They can be also be caused by heart disease or electrolyte imbalance. People who have several PVCs and/or symptoms associated with them should be evaluated by a cardiologist .

    Ventricular tachycardia

A rapid heartbeat that originates in the ventricles. The rapid rhythm keeps the heart from adequately filling with blood, and less blood is able to pump through the body. V-tach can be serious, especially in people with heart disease, and may be associated with more symptoms than other types of arrhythmia. A cardiologist should evaluate this condition.

    Ventricular fibrillation

An erratic, disorganized firing of impulses from the ventricles. The ventricles quiver and cannot generate an effective contraction, which results in a lack of blood being delivered to the body. This is a medical emergency that must be treated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation as soon as possible.

    When To Evaluate Heart Palpitations

Palpitations are symptoms of everything from short or long-term stress to a variety of arrhythmias . They may feel alarming, but do not always reflect a serious heart condition. Joseph Marine, M.D., vice-director of the Division of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins, starts his evaluation by asking his patients what they hear.

    What Is An Irregular Heartbeat

    Heart Arrhythmia

An irregular heartbeat goes by many names. Some people refer to them as heart palpitations. Others refer to it as arrhythmia. Others refer to it as premature ventricular contractions . All of these are generally referring to the same thing – alterations in the rhythm of your heart. It’s also experienced differently by different people. While some may feel like their heart has skipped a beat, others may experience a sudden acceleration and pounding of their heartbeat.

These symptoms can occur even in the healthiest of people. While PVCs can, in theory, aggravate underlying heart conditions and can be caused by factors other than anxiety, they are very often anxiety and stress related. Many are harmless.
