Can Stress Make You Feel Dizzy

Treatment For Whiplash And Dizziness

Can Anxiety Cause Dizziness and Fainting? HERE’S THE TRUTH…

While you may be tempted to wait out your pain and hope it goes away on its own, you risk developing chronic pain or other complications after a car accident injury. It is best to get checked out by a car accident doctor no matter how mild your pain may be or how small the wreck was. A general rule of thumb for seeing a car accident doctor is that if your car sustained any type of damage, including small scratches and dents, then your body likely did too. Visit a car accident doctor before pain and other symptoms set in and become unbearable.

A whiplash doctor will assess you for a potential whiplash injury and determine the best course of action. Talk to your doctor if you have been experiencing cervical vertigo and dizziness after a whiplash injury, and they will determine the best course of treatment for you. Disruptions to your spine after a whiplash injury can also lead to dizziness and other uncomfortable symptoms. Your car accident doctor recognizes how an injury like whiplash can affect both your physical and mental health. As you learn to manage the stress of getting into a car accident while also healing from an injury, your doctor will help you with uncomfortable symptoms like dizziness. You may notice a significant reduction in lightheadedness and dizziness as you learn to manage your stress and anxiety after the accident. Treatment for a whiplash injury can also help reduce your pain and stress while you heal.

Can Anxiety Cause Dizziness

Anxiety disorders may be associated with dizziness.

People with anxiety disorders, particularly those with panic disorder, often complain of feeling dizzy or lightheaded.

However, the link between dizziness and anxiety isn’t completely clear.

It’s thought, though, that stress-related hormones or compounds released during the fight-or-flight response might affect the vestibular system within the inner ear, which coordinates balance and movement. This, in turn, may be the source of feelings of dizziness or lightheadedness in some individuals with anxiety disorders.

How Does Anxiety Dizziness Feel Like

Patients describe dizziness as feeling unsteady, lightheaded, or weak. Another common question surrounding the matter is, Why do anxiety and dizziness occur together? Although dizziness is one of the most common anxiety symptoms, it is worth noting that it can also trigger anxiety. All in all, what are the causes of anxiety dizziness? Experts believe that dizziness starts from the vestibular system in the body. The vestibular system consists of certain parts of the brain, inner ear, and nerves.

Research indicates dizziness happens when a section of the brain responsible for dizziness and another one causing anxiety happens to react. In short, symptoms of anxiety dizziness occur when the vestibular system experiences some abnormality. As a result, individuals may experience a feeling of spinning or motion even when standing still. The reason behind this is the physiologic alternations in the brain.

Other causes of dizziness include low blood sugar, low blood pressure, dehydration, heatstroke, and certain medications. Bear in mind that symptoms get more pronounced if a patient experiences anxiety episodes frequently.

Those who notice that their stress and dizziness go together like peas and carrots might be left wondering: can stress cause dizziness? Can stress cause vertigo?

In our clinic, The Dizzy & Vertigo Institute of Los Angeles, between 25-50% of our vestibular patients report frequent anxiety. So stress and anxiety are very common among dizzy patients. But which causes which?

What Are Common Vertigo Treatments

Anxiety and dizziness: Find out why dizziness is a symptom of anxiety

The vertigo treatment thats right for you depends on several factors, including the root cause. Some of the most notable vertigo treatments include:

  • Medication: Treating the underlying cause of your vertigo can help ease symptoms. For example, if vertigo is a byproduct of an infection, your healthcare provider can prescribe antibiotics. Steroids can help reduce inflammation. There are also medications to relieve other vertigo symptoms, such as nausea or motion sickness.
  • Vestibular rehabilitation: If vertigo is the result of an inner ear problem, this type of physical therapy may help reduce your symptoms. Vestibular rehabilitation helps strengthen your other senses so they can compensate for vertigo episodes.
  • Canalith repositioning procedure : If you have BPPV, canalith repositioning maneuvers help move calcium deposits into an inner ear chamber where they will be absorbed by your body.
  • Surgery: When vertigo is due to a serious underlying issue, such as a brain tumor or neck injury, surgery may be necessary.

Dizziness And Vertigo May Be Side Effects From Medication

So many drugs can cause dizzy spells that there are too many to even list, says Whitman. That said, high doses of blood pressure medication can cause dizziness, especially in older adults and in people who have started a dose thats too high for them, says Whitman. In my dizziness clinic, I tend to start people on ultra-low doses of medication. Sometimes, less is more.

Check to see if any drugs youre taking may include dizziness, vertigo, or loss of balance as possible side effects by speaking with your pharmacist or physician. A careful review of medication lists, and looking for opportunities to decrease dosages, can sometimes yield surprising benefits, Whitman adds. Dont think that you shouldnt take a medication just because dizziness could be a potential side effect. Most people dont experience the side effects a drug may cause.

Is Dizziness From Anxiety Dangerous

As a symptom, no, dizziness from anxiety isnt dangerous. However, you might want to be extra cautious when doing certain activities, such as driving, operating heavy machinery, getting up from a lying or sitting position too quickly, or while using the stairs.

You might also want to avoid turning your head too quickly or being in environments with a lot of motion, such as crowds or where there is heavy traffic.

So again, while anxiety dizziness itself isnt dangerous, feeling dizzy, lightheaded, and off balance can cause problems when doing certain activities.

How Does Vision Affect The Balance System

Anxiety Dizziness, Vertigo, & Lightheadedness Symptoms!

In Ménières and other inner ear balance disorders, your brain must rely more on your sense of vision to balance more than people who do not have a balance disorder. As a result of this, your balance system can be more sensitive to confusing or disorienting information about your balance coming from your eyes. Dizziness can therefore be triggered by complex or moving visual environments , such as busy roads, moving crowds, or walking down the aisle of a supermarket where the shelves provide repetitive complex visual patterns. Other disorienting environments include travelling in a car or going up or down in a lift or an escalator.

Not having enough visual information, such as when you are in darkness, open spaces or travelling in a lift, can affect balance. Your eyes get their information about which way up you are from the environment. This information is taken from vertical structures, such as buildings, trees and lamp-posts. These vertical structures need to be quite close to you to be useful for your balance system. Several types of environments do not provide enough visual information for your brain and so can result in dizziness and unsteadiness. The most obvious of these is at night when it is dark, or when you are somewhere that only has dim lighting. There is also not enough visual information nearby when you are in large flat and open spaces , or looking down from heights.

Dizziness is commonly experienced by everyone worldwide. You might remember feeling it for the first time as a child after being spun around too fast on a merry-go-round. You could also experience dizziness after standing up too fast.

While everyone experiences dizziness differently, it generally describes the feeling when youre unsteady on your feet, feeling faint or woozy, or feeling as though the world is spinning around you.

Interestingly, people who suffer from anxiety are more likely to experience dizziness. A study of 1,287 participants¹ in Germany found that of the 15.8% of the group who experienced dizziness, over one-quarter of them had symptoms of at least one type of anxiety.

For some people, dizziness can get so bad it causes fainting, which increases the chances of injury. Fainting might be a result of blood pressure dropping, which can come from experiencing something fearful like intense pain, the sight of blood, or when the body undergoes physical stress.

Long Term Dizziness And Vertigo Solutions

While anxiety doesnt cause vertigo, you are likely to experience anxiety as a result of vertigo. Furthermore, your anxiety can make your vertigo worse. A great way to reduce your likelihood of experiencing dizziness and associated symptoms is to reduce your anxiety. Relationships Between Dizziness And Anxiety

The observation that dizziness is linked to anxiety leads to the question of which comes first, dizziness or anxiety? The answer seems to be, it depends. There are three broad diagnostic categories that have been described for the different types of relationship between anxiety and dizziness :

  • Psychiatric vestibular disorders: An anxiety disorder that causes dizziness
  • Example: Someone with a fear of needles may feel dizzy or lightheaded when they have their blood drawn
  • Structural vestibular disorders: Dizziness that is caused by a structural abnormality in the peripheral vestibular system or another balance system causes anxiety
  • Example: Someone who gets dizzy when they turn their head may develop anxiety about moving, especially if they are in a public setting
  • Functional vestibular disorders: Dizziness that is related to anxiety but that cant be linked to a psychological or structural disorder functional disorders describe abnormal function in a physiological system that is structurally normal,
  • Example: Someone who gets motion sickness may become anxious about driving or riding in a vehicle
  • These categories have some overlap, and they may co-exist with each other and with other disorders. Diagnosis is based on whether there is a definite cause for the anxiety and/or dizziness, the frequency and duration of episodes, how long they have been going on, and whether other symptoms are present.

    Hyperventilation And Feeling Light Headed

Why Feeling Really Dizzy Could Be a Sign of COVID

In people with anxiety, lightheadedness is often attributable to hyperventilation.

When your body experiences anxiety, it triggers the fight or flight system, which is the reflex designed to prepare your body for rapid action in order to evade threats. One of the symptoms is breathing rapidly. Its not 100% clear why breathing fast is advantageous from a biological perspective, but the most likely reasons include:

    • Breathing quickly helps your heart move blood around the important muscles and organs.
    • Breathing quickly reduces carbon dioxide in the bloodstream so that when you start to run you can handle the creation of more Co2.

That latter point is important. Studies have shown that by hyperventilating and depleting yourself of carbon dioxide, you can do things like hold your breath for longer, and potentially run away from predators or other threats. .

People often mistake hyperventilation for breathing too little oxygen. However, the opposite is true. In reality, hyperventilation is the act of breathing out too much carbon dioxide. Every time you exhale you breathe out Co2, and when you exhale too quickly, you breathe out more than you create. Eventually, your body is left with too little carbon dioxide in the bloodstream as a result of hyperventilation.

    How Much Money You Have

One reason why finances might trigger anxiety is because, in our minds, money is linked to survival. Money is really a resource that can provide people with a sense of safety and security, Chloe Carmichael, PhD, a psychologist in New York City previously told Health. When we feel that resource is scarce, it can actually make people feel like their survival is in jeopardy on a very primal level.

Some of the common financial stressors have to do with concerns about savings, job security, salary, lack of financial savvy, debt, identity theft, and wealth comparison.

Can Vertigo Be Triggered By Stress

The simple answer is that stress can trigger or worsen your symptoms, but it doesnt cause vertigo. Stress affects your bodys major systems. Youll recognize some negative effects of stress on your body immediately, but some are harder to notice and can be long term.

Hormone fluctuations during high-stress periods can impact your nervous system. Stress sets off your instincts, boosts your adrenaline and increases your blood pressure. Usually, your nervous system rights itself after youve calmed down, but you may feel your vertigo symptoms get worse.

Can stress cause vertigo when combined with other disorders? The results of a 2018 study suggest that a strong correlation exists between vertigo and stress for individuals with anxiety, mood and personality disorders.
