What Does Medicare Part C Cover
These private insurance plans pay for your medical care instead of Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans cover the same services as Medicare Part A and Part B. Some also include Part D prescription drug plan coverage. Additionally, some have expanded benefits like dental care, hearing, and vision insurance.
This biggest misconception about Medicare Advantage plans is that the cost-sharing is the same as Original Medicare, Part A and Part B. While Medicare Advantage plans must cover the same services as Part A and Part B, there are several caveats, such as the carrier deciding how much of that services cost they will cover, having to use a network of doctors, getting prior approval, etc.
So, while Part B may cover 80% of the service, your Medicare Advantage plan may only cover 60% in addition to having an additional copay. Since each carrier has its own summary of benefits, it may be difficult for beneficiaries to predict what their cost-sharing will be.
One benefit to these plans is that most come with a maximum out-of-pocket limit , unlike Part A and Part B. However, these limits are usually more than what a beneficiary on a limited income can afford and they continue to increase year over year.
Part C does not cover the following:
- Services by out-of-network providers
- Certain items and drugs without prior authorization

Cardiac Stress Tests Help Diagnose Problems With Your Heart To Reduce Your Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease
The term heart disease encompasses many types of heart conditions, but most often refers to coronary artery disease . CAD affects the blood flow to the heart and can lead to a heart attack or heart failure. Other heart conditions can lead to a stroke.
About 47% of people in the U.S. have at least one risk factor for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use.
That said, there are several screenings and prevention steps you can take to help diagnose or treat CAD or other cardiovascular disease. Read on to learn more about one example, cardiac stress tests, and other Medicare coverage for cardiovascular disease.
Does Medicare Cover Heart Disease Treatment And Prevention
Original Medicare Medicare Part A and Part B helps cover the costs of preventing, detecting and treating heart disease and other types of cardiovascular disease .
When doctors use the term heart disease, they are generally referring to coronary heart disease, but most people use the term as a catch-all phrase for other types of CVD including coronary heart disease, stroke, heart defects from birth and peripheral artery disease.
Heart Disease and Other CVD-Related Costs Medicare Helps To Cover
- Heart and cardiovascular disease screening
- Behavioral therapy
Original Medicare covers the full cost of CVD screenings and Medicare-approved cardiovascular behavioral therapy. If you receive these services from a health care provider that accepts Medicare and charges the Medicare-approved costs, you will not owe anything out of pocket.
For other diagnostic tests, medications and heart disease treatments, you can expect to have out-of-pocket expenses.

How Do I Prepare For A Heart Scan
Your doctor will typically ask you to fast for four to eight hours before the scan. You’ll be able to drink water. However, avoid caffeinated drinks since caffeine can affect your heart rate. You’ll be required to lie down on a table during the exam, so you may want to wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Coverage For Cardiac Catheterization
Medicare also covers minimally invasive heart disease treatments that may be a viable alternative to open heart surgery. These laparoscopic surgeries use small incisions and with the surgeon using tubes and small instruments to repair the blockages.
These procedures are collectively called cardiac catheterization because they involve catheters inserted into the affected heart arteries.
Cardiac Catheterization Alternatives to Open Heart Surgery
- Balloon angioplasty uses a catheter to place a medical balloon into the blocked artery. The balloon is inflated, it opens the narrowed artery and improves blood flow. This procedure does not always result in long-term improvement.
- Similar to an angioplasty, a metal stent is inserted into the blocked artery. It is expanded, opening the blockage and holding the artery open for years or decades. This procedure can cause blood clots, which are often treated with prescription blood thinners.
Typically, cardiac catheterization is covered by Medicare Part B medical insurance. You are responsible for your Part B deductible. After that, Medicare pays 80 percent, and you pay 20 percent of the costs.
Medicare Part A hospital insurance covers the procedure if youre admitted to a hospital and remain an inpatient through at least two midnights in a row during which the procedure is performed.

What Is A Nuclear Stress Test
The cost of nuclear test is often tied to the importance of test in evaluation of function of heart. The question why the cost of nuclear stress test is often high can be understood by knowing what is a nuclear stress test.
A nuclear stress test is performed in two stages at rest and after strenuous exercise. The aim of the test is to evaluate the working capacity of the heart to supply adequate blood to entire body all the time. The hearts function as a pump to supply blood to entire body depends on quality of heart muscles and heart valves. The normal blood supply to heart itself is extremely important to maintain oxygen supply and nourishment to heart muscles. Heart receives the blood through coronary artery.

Stress Scan Using Exercise
For stress scans using exercise, your heart rate will be checked with an EKG. Because EKG electrodes need to be attached to the chest, men are usually bare-chested and women usually wear a bra, gown, or loose shirt.
The exercise stress scan is done in two parts. First a set of resting images is taken. Then a set of stress images is taken right after exercise. Sometimes the stress scan is done first and the resting scan might be done the next day.
In many hospitals, first resting pictures are taken using one type of tracer. More pictures are taken using a different tracer after your heart has been stressed by exercise.
In this stress test, you exercise on a treadmill or stationary bike. Your heart rate and blood pressure will be checked during the test and for 5 to 10 minutes after the test.
You will start by walking or pedaling slowly and easily. Every few minutes, the speed or incline of the treadmill or resistance of the bike may be increased. You will exercise until you need to stop or until you reach a suitable heart rate. At that point, you will be given a tracer medicine through your IV.
You will then lie down on a table for scanning.
Sometimes more pictures are taken after you rest for 30 minutes to 4 hours.

What If I Need Cardiac Rehabilitation
If youve had a heart attack or have heart failure or other cardiac problems, a doctor may put you on a cardiac rehabilitation program that includes exercise, education and counseling.
Part B covers intensive or regular cardiac rehabilitation, if youve had one of the following:
- Current stable angina
- Heart valve repair or replacement

So, if you have an original Medicare plan and need prescription drug coverage, you can enroll in a Medicare Part D plan. Part D plans are available from Medicare-vetted private companies.
Another option is to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans are all-in-one replacements for original Medicare.
Most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage. These plans are also available through private insurance providers.
Medicare covers cardiac rehabilitation programs for qualifying conditions. These programs include:
- heart or heart-lung transplant
- current stable angina
Medicare Part B also covers some intensive cardiac rehabilitation programs if youve been referred by your doctor. These programs typically include a more intense physical workout, as well as counseling and education.
If you get these services in a hospital setting, youll be responsible for paying the hospital a copayment of the Medicare-approved amount.
If you get these services in a doctors office, you be responsible for paying 20 percent of that amount. This applies after youve met your Medicare Part B deductible .
