Does Medicare Cover Nuclear Stress Test

What Is A Nuclear Cardiology Stress Test

What a Stress Test Can (and Can’t) Tell You

This noninvasive test assesses blood-flow patterns to the muscle of the heart to determine whether coronary artery disease is the cause of your symptoms. The test also evaluates the progression of the disease in patients already diagnosed with coronary artery disease.

Coronary artery disease produces stenosis, narrowing and potentially blockages in the arteries that supply blood to the muscle of the heart. Performing the nuclear stress test will provide your physician with information on the impact the disease has had on blood flow to the heart during exercise or stress.

Test Results And Its Comparison

The cardiologist will study and evaluate the findings of electrocardiogram, echocardiogram and nuclear scan studies during first and second phase. The diagnosis depends on careful evaluation of prior history of cardiac symptoms, history of symptoms during the study and abnormal findings of nuclear stress test. The nuclear stress test also helps to evaluate heart valve disease and cardiomyopathy.

Stress Scan Using Medicine

The stress scan is done in two parts. In many hospitals, the first images are taken while the person is at rest. Then a second set of images is taken after the person is given a medicine such as adenosine. It makes the heart respond like it would to exercise. Exercise and the medicine increase the amount of blood that your heart needs. Sometimes the stress scan is done first and the resting scan might be done the next day. Sometimes only a stress scan is done.

A stress test with medicine is often combined with a low-level exercise stress test. Medicine is also used when a person can’t exercise for some reason.

For this test, you will be asked to sit or lie on the examining table. You will be given a routine electrocardiogram .

Then you will be given the medicine through your IV. More EKGs and blood pressure measurements are often taken. After the medicine takes effect, a small amount of radioactive tracer is given through your IV.

You will wait about 30 to 60 minutes. You might be asked to eat or drink something. Then you will lie down on a table for a set of scans. The camera records the tracer that has moved from your blood into your heart muscle.

Sometimes more pictures are taken after you rest for 2 to 4 hours, or even the next day.

Why Is Nuclear Stress Test Done

Apart from asking about the stress echocardiogram price, you would wonder why is this test done?

There are various reasons why a doctor may suggest that you undergo a nuclear stress test. For instance, your doctor may recommend this test to diagnose your coronary arteries. These arteries are blood vessels that supply blood to your heart as well as nutrients and oxygen. When you have a coronary artery disease, your arteries are damaged due to plague buildup.

Another reason for the test is to see the image of your heart, its shape and size. Doctors can see if it is enlarged which means that there are complications. By having a stress test, it serves as a guide in order to treat different heart disorders and diseases. Based on the analysis of the results, the doctor will work on the treatment plan that will cure your condition.

NUCLEAR STRESS TEST HOW TO PERFORM | HOW TO PROCESS

For stress scans using exercise, your heart rate will be checked with an EKG. Because EKG electrodes need to be attached to the chest, men are usually bare-chested and women usually wear a bra, gown, or loose shirt.

The exercise stress scan is done in two parts. First a set of resting images is taken. Then a set of stress images is taken right after exercise. Sometimes the stress scan is done first and the resting scan might be done the next day.

In many hospitals, first resting pictures are taken using one type of tracer. More pictures are taken using a different tracer after your heart has been stressed by exercise.

In this stress test, you exercise on a treadmill or stationary bike. Your heart rate and blood pressure will be checked during the test and for 5 to 10 minutes after the test.

You will start by walking or pedaling slowly and easily. Every few minutes, the speed or incline of the treadmill or resistance of the bike may be increased. You will exercise until you need to stop or until you reach a suitable heart rate. At that point, you will be given a tracer medicine through your IV.

You will then lie down on a table for scanning.

Sometimes more pictures are taken after you rest for 30 minutes to 4 hours.

How Medicare Prevents And Screens For Heart Disease

Shereen Lehman, MS, is a healthcare journalist and fact checker. She has co-authored two books for the popular Dummies Series .

Heart disease remains the number one killer of Americans. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , one in four deaths is attributed to some form of cardiovascular disease.

As many as 805,000 people have a heart attack and 795,000 people have a stroke every year.

Cardiovascular disease, if left untreated, can lead to serious debilitation and even death. That not only costs you in health, but it costs you in dollars. A study by the CDC Foundation estimated that direct medical costs for heart disease could reach $818 billion annually by 2030. When you add lost productivity to the mix, that amount could rise to over $1 trillion per year.

It is more important than ever to take steps to prevent these diseases whenever possible. Eating right, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking can help, but sometimes our genes run the show. Preventive screening and early treatment can help to decrease complications from these diseases, perhaps even cure them. For these reasons, Medicare covers the following tests and treatments, many of them for free but some only under certain circumstances.

You will be asked to lie on your back, knees flexed and supported, and raise your arms over your head so that the camera can be positioned directly above your heart. For longer images, EKG leads will be placed on your chest to allow the imaging equipment to be synchronized with your heartbeat. This is called a “gated” nuclear cardiology test. Once the leads are in place, the camera will be set up to take a series of images of your heart as it moves around your body.

    Heart Monitoring And Testing

Medicare covers critical testing and a cardiovascular blood screening every five years. The preventative screenings will include triglycerides, cholesterol, and lipid level testing.

These screenings will help determine if you have conditions leading to heart disease and complications. The cardiovascular screening will be at no cost if your healthcare provider is a participating Medicare provider.
