Potential Reason No 2 For Breast Pain: Noncyclical Breast Pain
Breast pain thats not related to your hormone levels is noncyclical mastalgia, or noncyclical breast pain. This type of breast pain can be harder to diagnose. It could be related to the structure of your breasts, particularly if you have heavy or large breasts. Traumatic injury to the breasts or a breast cyst also may cause breast pain. An imbalance of fatty acids in your diet can contribute to breast pain, because your breasts are made up of breast tissue and fat.
Sometimes the pain isnt actually in your breasts its in your chest wall, which protects your heart and lungs. Because your chest wall is so close to your breasts, problems in your chest wall like costochondritis can feel like breast pain.
Breast pain also can be linked to pregnancy, especially in the first trimester or in women who are pregnant at a young age. After birth, women can experience pain if a milk duct doesnt drain properly and becomes infected. This condition is called breastfeeding mastitis. About 10 percent of U.S. mothers who breastfeed have breastfeeding mastitis at some point, and it can become serious if its not treated.
Some medications for other conditions can cause breast pain. These include medications for:
- Mental disorders
People used to think breast pain was caused by getting too much caffeine in the food or drinks they had, like coffee, tea, or chocolate. Weve moved away from that assumption, as its never been proven.

Preventing Recurrences In Stressed Out Mice
The researchers next explored whether the same cascade occurred in mice that were stressed from being confined for a few hours a day.
Stressed mice had more neutrophils in their lungs and spleens than unstressed mice, the scientists found. The stressed mice also had more S100 proteins in their blood. Dormant lung cancer cells formed tumors in stressed mice but not in unstressed mice.
However, when stressed mice were treated with a beta blocker, a blood pressure medicine that blocks stress hormones, dormant cancer cells couldnt form tumors. The researchers saw similar effects when mice were treated with tasquinimod, a drug that blocks the activity of S100 proteins and has been tested in people with prostate cancer.
The team also looked at blood samples from 80 people who had had surgery to remove their lung tumors. For 17 patients, the cancer came back within 3 years of their surgery. For the others, the cancer came back more than 3 years later or didnt come back at all.
Earlier recurrence was more likely among patients with high levels of S100 proteins or norepinephrine in their blood than among those with low levels. Similarly, a 2019 study linked levels of S100 proteins in melanoma tumors with cancer metastasis and how long patients lived. However, a recent analysis of several studies found that the use of beta blockers wasnt linked with longer survival of cancer patients.

Caffeine And Breast Pain
Your morning brew might be the culprit behind your breast pain, but unfortunately, were still not sure why.
What do we know so far? In a study on women with pain associated with fibrocystic breast disease, a reduction in the amount of caffeine consumed led to less breast pain.
How can I use this information? Trialling a few less coffees a day or week could yield beneficial results. If the idea of not having coffee is a terrifying prospect, switching to decaf or a strong, black tea could be a satisfactory substitute.

Preclinical Studies Using Pharmacologic Blockade
Stress results in activation of the SNS which releases neurotransmitters epinephrine and NE that act on -adrenergic receptors. As discussed, the -adrenergic signaling pathway plays a key role in tumor progression via direct pro-tumorigenic effect on cancer cells and inhibition of anti-cancer immunity. To combat these mechanisms, several preclinical studies have explored the role of repurposing -blockers as an effective anti-tumor armamentarium since it is relatively inexpensive and safe. Both selective and non-selective -blockers have been studied in various preclinical cancer models. Interestingly, non-selective 1/2-receptor antagonists like propranolol have shown to decrease tumor growth and migration of cancer cells . However, studies with 1-selective antagonists like atenolol did not demonstrate similar tumor inhibitory effects . These studies highlight the crucial role played by 2-adrenergic signaling in tumorigenesis. 2-Adrenergic receptors are present both on the tumor cells and immune cells and abrogation of the signaling pathway via non-selective -blockers is able to reverse the pro-tumorigenic cascade .
Findings from these preclinical models of chronic stress are applicable to the clinical setting when patients are diagnosed with cancer, as the physical and psychological symptoms from cancer diagnosis along with cancer treatment is considered a long-standing stressful situation for these patients.
Effect Of Depression And Anxiety On Mortality In Breast Cancer Patients
As shown in Supplementary Fig. , four studies yielded a pooled HR of 1.34 for the association between depression and anxiety and all-cause mortality based on fixed-effects model analyses. Low heterogeneity was observed, with I2=0.0% and P=0.755. Furthermore, two studies yielded a pooled HR of 1.45 for the association between depression and anxiety and breast cancer-specific mortality. Low heterogeneity was observed, with I2=49.3% and P=0.160.

Can Stress Cause Breast Cancer To Recur Or Spread
While we’re not sure where we are at with cancer initiation, it appears that stress is a bad idea for people who have had breast cancer.
Researchers have looked at this from several angles, albeit mostly in cells in a dish or in rodents thus far.
From a biological standpoint it would make sense that stress could stimulate breast cancer to grow or spread. When we are stressed we release a hormone called norepinephrine, one of our “stress hormones.” Norepinephrine in turn may stimulate both the formation of new blood vessels by cancers and hasten metastasis . Other studies looking at something called “telomerase activity” also suggest that there could be a biological basis behind stress facilitating the recurrence or spread of cancer.
Does this translate to living creatures? For mice who were placed in a simulated stressful environment, their tumors were more likely to spread.
Studies in humans also seem to point a naughty finger at stress, though it’s more difficult to separate out confounding factors. In a fairly large study, women with some types of breast cancer lived longer if they participated in mindfulness stress reduction activities.
As a final note, we know that stress can cause insomnia. We’ve also learned that insomnia can be dangerous for people who have had cancer, having been associated with lower survival rates for women with some types of breast cancer.
Why Am I Feeling This Way
When you have breast cancer, there can be many changes to your life that may make you feel stressed or anxious, or may lead to depression. These include:
- Coming to terms with the diagnosis
- Wondering why me?
- Dealing with uncertainty and imagining the worst
- Dealing with tiredness, pain and other side effects of treatment
- Dealing with practicalities such as family, work and financial adjustments
- Dealing with the responses of your partner, children, family and friends to your diagnosis.

Chronic Stress Promotes Tumorigenesis And Cancer Development By Suppressing Immunity
As the core immune cells, thymus-dependent lymphocytes provide a robust line of defense against infections and cancers. The cellular immunity mediated by them includes specific binding to their target cells for direct cell destruction or elimination and the release of cytokines to enhance and expand the immune effects. T cells can be roughly classified into the cytotoxic T cells, the helper T cells, and the regulatory/inhibitory T cells according to their functions. Based on different cytokine functions, the helper T cells are divided into Th1 or Th2 cells, which are differentiated from TH0 cells by their regulation by the cytokines IL-12 and IL-4. Th1 cells usually produce IFN-Î³, TNF-Î², and IL-2, and mediate cellular immune responses, such as inducing macrophage activation, mediating delayed hypersensitivity, and assisting CTL activation and proliferation. Swedish Study Suggests That Chilling Out now Could Lower Breast Cancer Risk Later
Sept. 24, 2003 — As if life isn’t stressful enough, Swedish researchers say that being under stress maydouble a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.
They based their findings on surveys of more than 1,400 Swedish women in the late 1960s who were part of a long-term health-care study.
The women, who were reported to be a representative sample of the Swedish population, were asked to fill out a health survey, which included a question about stress, asking whether at any time in the last five years they had experienced a feeling of stress for a month or more.
Examples of stressful situations the women might have encountered were tension, fear, anxiety, or sleep disturbances related to family or work problems. Because the question about stress was only one of many different questions asked at the time, the researchers felt that their answers would probably have accurately reflected the way they felt at the time, says Oesten Helgesson, MD, a physician in the department of primary health care at Gothenburg University.
Although other studies have looked at the question of whether stress can contribute to breast cancer, those studies were based on reports from individual patients who were already diagnosed with cancer, and that could skew the results, says Helgesson, in an interview with WebMD at a European cancer conference here.

There is little doubt that having cancer can be very stressful, but can stress cause cancer, or accelerate its progress?
My interest in stress and cancer began around 55 years ago, when I had a Fellowship at Hans Selyes Institute of Experimental Medicine and Surgery at the University of Montreal. His magnum opus Stress had just been published in 1950, expanding on his theory of the General Adaptation Syndrome and its resultant Diseases of Adaptation. One of the hallmarks of his Alarm Reaction, the first phase of this syndrome, was marked dissolution of lymphoid tissue and atrophy of the thymus gland. However, the significance of this was not clear with respect to its implications for altered immune system function that might predispose to malignancy.
During dinner at his home one evening, Selye indicated that he had been intrigued with the possible relationship between stress and cancer. He cited various anecdotal reports of the onset of malignancy following emotional stress. He was fascinated by the phenomenon of spontaneous remission, which he thought was due to a strong faith that buffered the harmful effects of stress, and we discussed various aspects of this with respect to its relevance to the General Adaptation Syndrome. I suggested to him that cancer might possibly represent another Disease of Adaptation, or a response to stress that had gone awry, but our conversation soon turned to more pressing priorities.

Do Any Studies Link Career Stress To Cancer
Prolonged exposure to stress at work was linked to greater odds of cancer at 5 out of 11 cancer sites. Employment in at least one stressful job was linked to an increased chance of developing cancer of the lung, colon, bladder, rectum, stomach, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Researchers acknowledged study limitations, such as over-reporting of stress among those who had cancer, but they maintained that if these links are substantiated, they could eventually churn up some important discoveries to advance science and medicine.
The group called for prospective studies to examine this question furtherin other words, they point to the need for studies that begin with a group of healthy people, carefully measuring stress in a standardized way, and then years later do the analysis on cancer development, considering all the different sources of stress and changes over the span of the career, and controlling for other variables as much as possible. It’s a tall order.
