What Types Of Canker Sores Are There

There are three types of canker sores. Roughly 80% of them are about the size of a pea and heal completely within two weeks without any treatment. These are known as minor aphthae, or MiRAS .

The ones that are larger than a kidney bean are called major apthae, or MaRAS , and account for about 10-15% of canker sores. These types take more than two weeks to heal and often leave scars.

In about 5-10% of cases, canker sores manifest as are a crop of many small ones . Each of these heals completely within two weeks but new ones keep popping up, giving the appearance of continuous canker sores. These are called herpetiform ulcers . The name comes from the similarity in their appearance to symptoms of herpes simplex virus infection. It is otherwise unrelated to herpes simplex virus.

All three types of canker sores can cause minimal to extreme pain, depending on the pain perception of each individual.
