Today’s article comes down to what to do in a high stress situation and it’s based off a question I just got from a gentleman.
I’m going to cover with you what constitutes a high-stress situation and how research has shown people react in stressful situations.
I’ll then give you a 5-step plan on how to act in for high-stress situations and prepare yourself for such situations in advance.
How To Answer How Do You Handle Stress At Work
When the interviewer asks about stressful situations and how you handle stress, the best approach is to demonstrate that youve encountered these situations in the past and arent phased by it. And then, describe the steps you follow to calmly get through the challenge.
Its best if you can sound like you have a proven process/plan in place. Employers love to hear that you have a system or a series of steps that you follow that you know works for you.
Now that you know the right way to answer questions about how you deal with stress, lets look at some word-for-word examples:
Relax Then Relax Some More
In the midst of a busy, hectic, stressful day, it is very easy to forget about taking care of your emotional and physical wellbeing. When your boss is acting like a dictator or you are late on a project, its very tempting to allow this negativity to take over your day.
Instead, try to use the extra downtime at work to relax and rejuvenate. When you have a break, take a few minutes to step away from everything and let go. Do some breathing exercises, read, or send a quick text to a loved one. Spend your lunch hour doing something enjoyable and forget about the negative that happened before. Remember, relaxation doesnt require a significant amount of time. Its what you do with this time that ultimately makes the big difference in your mindset.

Spend Some Time Thinking About How You Approach Stress
Start by considering the following questions to help you plan a positive, interviewer-focused answer that shows youve thought about your relationship to stress:
- What were the causes of the stressful situation?
- If you contributed to creating a stressful situation, what could you have done differently to avoid it?
- What was your reaction like?
- How did you reduce or mitigate the stress?
- If you could react to that situation again, what would you have done differently?
- In what ways did stress help or hurt your work?
My Personal Experience In Stressful Scenarios
I’ve had the privilege of being an officer in the Marines and serving with some amazingly well-trained people.
Myself and the men I served with were actually deployed it’s not like we just did our training and stayed at the base.
We worked with Navy Seals and I have a number of friends who are Army Rangers and I can assure you that these gentlemen have done things that are pretty amazing.

Embrace The Adrenaline And Treat It As Positive
Fortunately, there is evidence that some level of stress is actually helpful, and can improve performanceprovided you believe that this is the case.
Elite athletes, for example, often believe that adrenaline, one of the main stress hormones, is helpful in improving performance. It is, after all, the flight or fight hormone, so you can harness it to help you to fight. Changing your mindset to embrace adrenaline can be a good start to changing how you view stress, especially if you have taken steps to reduce and avoid it more generally.

How Not To Answer How Do You Handle Stress
Stress? Never experienced it.
As we said, an interviewer wants to hire someone they know will be reliable when things get tough but playing the emotionless robot card isnt going to win you any points.
Besides, everyone experiences stress, so saying you dont just means youre lying and nobody wants to hire a liar.
Stress just motivates me to work harder.
While this might seem like the right answer, its not. Hiring someone who is convinced they need to solve every problem themselves means they might not realize at some point that their problem is too big to handle alone.
A lone wolf employee might end up waiting too long to bring in additional help resulting in a problem that could have been solved much earlier and cheaper blowing up into something much bigger and much more expensive.
I remove myself from the situation, take time to look at it from all angles, and then attack whatever is causing me stress in the most efficient way.
Another sounds like it should be rightbut its not! answer.
In this case, youre telling the hiring manager that when things get toughyou leave. And yes, we know you said you come back after youve formulated your plan of attack, but stillwe cant get past the part where you walk away for an unknown amount of time.
Dude, I dont know about you, but I like to unwind by grabbing a beer and just feeling the mellow wash over me after work.
All were going to say istheres a thing called oversharing.

You Need To Be Able To Control Something
The first step to remain calm and rational is to assert your control of the situation even if it’s something insignificant to the overall situation.
Let’s step back to our situation:
Drunk, belligerent jumps behind counter and says he’s going to stab people, shoot people.
So what can you control?
There’s not a whole lot there.
But there is one thing you can control: Your breathing.
NASA also did some research on this specific issue because astronauts must have one of the most stressful jobs on the planet.
We’re talking about people getting strapped to a bomb filled with rocket fuel and shot up into space that could explode at any second.
There’s not much control to be had over the situation when you’re being launched into space.
But what NASA’s study showed the could control was their breathing so they trained them to control their breathing and thereby control their state of mind.
These astronauts repeatedly practice everything they COULD control in their situation.
Of course if the rocket blew up there’s not much they could do.
But by being able to control their breathing they manage to retain control and prepare themselves to deal with any situation they can affect.
Further research was done over in La Jolla at the Veteran Affairs Center in San Diego.
This trial showed that Navy Seals, special ops forces and men with similar training reacted in a unique and unnatural way when put into stressful situations :
Their pulse slows down.
What Are Stressful Situations
Stressful situations will look different for each person. What one person may be able to handle with little or no stress, someone else may experience a lot of stress over. And, you may experience stress over big life-changing events in your life or over small everyday problems.
Large situations that could cause stress in your life could include things like:
- The death of a loved one
- Moving to a new area
- Switching jobs
- Getting divorced
Many people understand that large situations like that often come with stress. However, these same people may struggle to identify the source of stress in their own life. If you feel like you shouldnt have stress because youre not living through a large situation like one listed above, its important to give yourself a break.
Many things can cause stress in life. And, even small stresses can turn into chronic stress if not addressed. Some of the smaller causes of stress in life include things like:
- Living paycheck to paycheck
- Working long hours
- Fighting with a spouse or significant other

This shows the interviewer that not only were you able to deal with things internally, on an emotional level, but you were also able to architect a desirable from a less-than-desirable circumstance.
As before, assuming you chose a suitable example, this part should come naturally as you explain what ultimately happened.
The best outcomes are those that benefit everyone involved, so try to include different perspectives where relevant.
Soon nough, we had orders flowing through the kitchen like any other shift. Customers were able to get their orders in, and the staff were able to perform their duties with minimal inconvenience. In fact, it worked so well that I was tasked with creating an offical standard operating procedure for the paper-based system in case of a future system failure.
When The Stress Is Because Of A Deadline
Deadlines can be a source of stress for employees who experience a sudden increase in workload or have issues with time management. When answering such questions, emphasize your organization and time-management skills.
Example:“When I have multiple or intense deadlines, I use a strict schedule to break tasks down into manageable parts and approach them individually. For example, at my last job, a coworker got sick, and I had to deliver a project plan in a week. I sat down and broke down my tasks, scheduling each segment. As a result, I could complete the project a day ahead of the deadline and get back to my other commitments.”

How To Answer An Interview
The primary purpose of the asking question is an interview. Here theres nothing more only you should give your best which is as vital as helping the interviewer understand. What Not To Say
Dont mention an issue you created. Avoid mentioning a time when you put yourself in a needlessly stressful situation. You don’t want to come across as someone who causes workplace stress.
Dont say that you were really stressed. You shouldnt focus too much on how stressed out you felt. While you should certainly admit that stress happens, try to emphasize how you dealt with the stress rather than how much it bothered you.
Stress When Something Goes Wrong
There will always be something unexpected happening in our work. When it is a big thing, it can create stress, so you might have an example from your past like the ones below that you could use when youre asked this in an interview.
Example 13: Information gathering and knowing all the facts that I can is how I handle stress in an uncertain situation. In my last job, we didnt know if we might be affected by the global economic crisis, so I spent some time researching our industry and it gave me more peace to know a little more about what was happening.
Example 14: When our software system crashed at my last role, that was stressful for everyone, so I personally handled that by finding a similar software program as soon as the crash happened. I brought this to management to see if we could use that so that we didnt get overwhelmed. Problem-solving is one of my strengths.
Example 15: I am thankfully a very adaptable person, so when we had a difficult day in the office with the power going out, I felt calm in knowing that we just needed to do what we could do, and thats it for that day. Being flexible and accepting what is out of my control was what made me stay fully calm in that situation.
