The other avenue where Apple could distinguish its stress management offerings is by adding in expanded mental health and stress management offerings into Apple Fitness+.
Currently, Apple showcases physical Fitness+ workouts rather than meditation, stress, and other mental exercises.
Although there are some Yoga and mindful cool-down features, Apple could easily integrate its stress management feature into new offerings in Apple Fitness+.
There are a handful of third-party Apple Watch apps that provide some form of stress score reporting.
Stress monitor and Stress Scan are two such apps that are used by many users today.
Although these apps have essentially leveraged HRV scores to produce stress heat maps and other nice features, they lack the deep integration required to offer any substantive stress management features.
Apple competitors such as Fitbit roped in Deepak Chopra for its mindfulness and meditation session offerings on its premium platform.
We, therefore, think that its only a matter of time that Apple will start producing some serious mental health-related content offerings on the Apple Fitness+ platform and tie it with individual stress scores or partner up with Headspace or a similar firm to offer a comprehensive solution.

Apple Will Monitor Your Mental Health From Iphone Apple Watch Data In Future
Apple is working on a way to help diagnose and detect mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and cognitive decline using an iPhone.

Reported first by the Wall Street Journal with the data collected on the iPhone such as sleep patterns, mobility and the way people type could help them spot behaviours associated with mental health conditions.
Other kinds of data collection include facial expression analysis and heart and respiration patterns. As per the report, the data collected would be processed on the device and none of it will be shared with Apples servers.
This study is being done in collaboration with the University of California, Los Angeles where researchers are looking at stress, anxiety and depression collected from Apple Watch and iPhone data for 3,000 volunteers who will be tracked for the study, commencing this year.
The pilot phase of the study commenced in 2020 and recorded information from 150 participants.
Researchers will be comparing data collected from iPhone and Apple Watch sensors along with a series of questions that participants will answer about how they feel. Researchers are also measuring the level of stress hormone cortisol in the participants hair follicles.

The Apple Watch can already warn its wearer about the signs of atrial fibrillation and call for an ambulance if you fall over. Now Apple wants to focus on your mental health, too.
According to sources speaking to technology tipster Max Weinbach, Apple is working on a way for the Watchs watchOS software to detect the signs of stress. This could even lead to the smartwatch alerting its users if it thinks they are about to have a panic attack.
The Watch could then walk the wearer through some breathing exercises to help calm them down again.
Apple already includes a guided breathing app with the Watch, with reminders to take a break and breathe deeply several times each day. But it sounds like Apple wants to be more proactive with how the Watch does this, using data collected from the wearer to judge their mental wellbeing, then step in if required.

Fitbit’s launch comes just before Apple is expected to debut the Apple Watch Series 6, which rumors and reports suggest will come with sleep tracking, better water resistance, and the ability to measure blood-oxygen levels.
The digital health market has also become increasingly competitive in recent years, as other rival smartwatch makers have begun to focus more closely on health and wellness to make their products stand out. Samsung, for example, just announced the Galaxy Watch 3 earlier this month and touted the watch’s ability to detect hard falls, take SpO2 readings, and run ECG tests as its standout features.
Apple, however, remained the top seller of smartwatches in the first quarter of 2020, accounting for 36.3% of global shipments, according to market research firm Canalys. With the Sense and Versa 3, Fitbit appears to be attempting to catch up by expanding its features to include mental wellness metrics and offering products at prices that are more aggressive than Apple’s.

How The Ecg App Works
The ECG app on Apple Watch Series 4, Series 5, Series 6, or Series 7 generates an ECG that is similar to a single-lead ECG. In a doctors office, a standard 12-lead ECG is usually taken. This 12-lead ECG records electrical signals from different angles in the heart to produce twelve different waveforms. The ECG app on Apple Watch measures a waveform similar to one of those twelve waveforms. A single-lead ECG is able to provide information about heart rate and heart rhythm and enables classification of AFib. However, a single-lead ECG cannot be used to identify some other conditions, like heart attacks. Single-lead ECGs are often prescribed by doctors for people to wear at home or within the hospital so that the doctor can get a better look at the underlying rate and rhythm of the heart. However, the ECG app on Apple Watch Series 4, Series 5, Series 6, or Series 7 allows you to generate an ECG similar to a single-lead ECG without a prescription from your doctor.
In studies comparing the ECG app on Apple Watch to a standard 12-lead ECG taken at the same time, there was agreement between the ECG app classification of the rhythm as sinus or AFib compared to the standard 12-lead ECG.
The clinical validation results reflect use in a controlled environment. Real world use of the ECG app may result in a greater number of strips being deemed inconclusive and not classifiable.

Azumio App Turns Iphone Into A Stress Gauge
Two apps from Bay Area start-up–a stress monitor and a heart rate gauge–attempt to make personal health monitoring easier by removing the need for accessories.
Yesterday started like so many others, with me standing in the back of a noisy, sweltering bus that smelled of urine. But unlike previous mornings, this time I was able to use my phone to quantify my stress level as it mounted with each jarring pothole.
Armed with a new app called Stress Check on my iPhone, I could verify that the stress I was feeling was real–when I woke up my level was 1 percent, but on the bus it topped 100. And while a number of apps require an external attachment to take health measurements, Stress Check required just me and my phone.
Released a couple of weeks ago, Stress Check is one of several apps from Palo Alto, Calif. start-up Azumio, which recently received $2.5 million in series A funding. The company’s first health-oriented app, Instant Heart Rate , has generated 8 million downloads since its release in January. The company has more apps in the pipeline.
If it’s easy, and fun, to collect personal health data, more people will likely be inclined to do so–and take action, reasons Azumio co-founder Bojan Bostjancic, who stopped by CNET headquarters last week to demo the company’s health apps.
I can’t vouch for the app’s accuracy, but it does at least appear to be capable of reading low and high stress responses, as indicated by the elevated reading during my bus ride.
