Its common to hear stress and pressure used interchangeably. But theres a difference: pressure refers to external expectations to perform or deliver and stress refers to internal perceptions of unpreparedness or lack of resources.
For example, stress would be what you feel when you have three assignments due in 3 days and not enough hours in the day to complete them.
And pressure would be having a low grade in a class and knowing you need a specific high score on the upcoming final to pass the course.

During the second quarter of the school year, I started talking to my seventh graders about stress. We did a simple self-assessment and nearly all of my students were reporting high levels of stress about things like school work and interpersonal problems. This is of course not unique to my students. According to a study from the APA, students are more stressed out than ever, reporting levels of stress higher than those of adults during the school year. So how can we help kids deal with stress? Limit Your Media Consumption

There are a number of common reactions to stressful circumstances such as these, including:
- Behavioural – these could involve avoiding or escaping from the situation and turning to alcohol or drugs, a change in appetite or an inability to concentrate.
- Physical – you may experience an increased heart rate, sweating, shaking, headaches, butterflies and over-breathing.
- Psychological – stress can lead to fear, panic and the feeling that something bad is going to happen.
‘Stress is a normal, and in some cases, helpful part of everyday life,’ explains Kate Aitchison, team manager of the counselling and mental health team at Newcastle University. ‘The adrenaline that comes as part of our stress response can be motivating and actually help us to perform better. The difficulty comes when stress tips over to distress. When stress is having a negative impact on day-to-day life, when it stops you achieving, relaxing or communicating – thats when some support may help.’
Develop Better Sleep Habits
Maintaining good sleep hygiene is hard. As a high school student, you dont have a lot of control over your schedule school starts at a certain time, extracurriculars and part-time jobs may dominate your after-school hours, and then theres homework, a social life, and family obligations to juggle.
However, its well worth the effort to prioritize your sleep and maintain a consistent sleep schedule. A good nights sleep provides your body and mind with a solid foundation from which to approach the next days tasks. As a teenager especially, youre still growing and developing, and your body needs sleep to do this optimally.
One step that you can take is to try to eliminate things that can disrupt your sleep, such as light and sound. You may want to invest in tools that help you control these factors, such as light-blocking curtains, eye masks, earplugs, or white-noise machines. You should try to keep your room at a comfortable temperaturebeing too hot or too cold can also disrupt your sleep.
Caffeine can also be a problem for high-school students who depend on coffee or energy drinks to get through the day. Not only can excessive caffeine cause health problems, but getting too much caffeine, especially late in the day, can seriously affect your sleep. Try tracking your caffeine intakeyou may be surprised at how much youre ingesting.

Give Yourself A Break
Dont feel bad about setting aside time in your life to do things that you enjoy and that make you happy, whether or not they seem productive. In fact, you should feel good about taking breaksits an essential part of taking care of yourself. All of us need time to rest and refuel.
What you should do on your breaks depends entirely on you. Some people find that quiet activities like reading a book or watching TV are the best way to relax. Others prefer more active breaks spent working on personal projects, exercising, or spending time outdoors. Only you can say which activities work best for letting you unwind.

Stress In College Students
In 2018, the American College Health Associations National College Health Assessment report found that more than 45% of college students surveyed reported feeling more stress than average, and nearly 13% felt tremendous stress. .
A study by Brigham and Womens Hospital researcher Dr. Cindy Liu found high stress rates among more than 67,000 students at more than 100 colleges and universities. Mental health diagnoses and risk of suicidal thoughts were reported by all students, especially those in racial, ethnic and gender minorities, according to the study published in the journal Depression & Anxiety.
Some stressful events cannot be prevented and, in some cases, are completely normal. But for others, a plan should be in place for family, friends and colleges to provide support, Liu said in a release from Brigham and Womens Hospital. Our study highlights an urgent need to help students reduce their experience of overwhelming levels of stress during college.”
Dr. Darleen Dempster, a licensed professional counselor and a faculty member of Southern New Hampshire Universitys clinical mental health counseling program, said college students could face unique stressors ranging from difficulties managing their time and balancing relationships to determining a career path.
