I know youre trying to get rid of your unwanted thoughts. But let me ask you a question.

Do you even recognize the exact thoughts youre trying to get rid of?

If you dont, what are you doing?

Youre probably going about it the wrong way.

This is because youre not dealing with the underlying causes of your problems. Youre focusing on symptoms instead.

But the truth is that you need to know exactly whats causing your unwanted thoughts. Otherwise, youll end up wasting your efforts and energy on things that wont work.

Let me tell you a secret.

Sometimes, all it takes to free your mind from unwanted thoughts is to simply notice when theyre there.

Once youre aware of your thoughts and their influence on your emotions, you can take action to change them.

But how do you know which thoughts are unwanted?

Its simple. Just ask yourself the following question:

Do I want to think about this?

If the answer is yes, then its a thought you want to keep in your mind. If the answer is no, its a thought you want to get rid of. And if you dont know for sure, its probably not a thought you want to keep in your mind. Got it?

Interrupt The Worry Cycle

Do Exercise. Its one of the best treatments for anxiety. It overcomes feelings of stress and helps us feel relaxed. Eat a good balanced and healthy diet. This boosts your energy and creates interest in us to perform well in studies or work. Go on drives, travel to new places for getting a rejuvenated mood. Listen to songs that help in healing your mind and soul. Talk with your friends, and, near and dear ones. Feel the joy in small things, such as try to feel the gentle breeze of wind, the rays of the morning sun, etc.

Learn To Live In The Moment

One of the best ways to clear your mind is to simply focus on the task at hand. Not only is living in the present moment useful for clearing your mind, but it leads to a higher quality of life as well.

Using an iPhone application called Track Your Happiness, Harvard psychologists found that daydreaming is associated with lower levels of happiness.

The study periodically polled more than 2000 adults who reported what they were doing, whether their minds were wandering and how happy they were.

About half the time, the participants were thinking about something other than the task at hand.

According to the study, the ability to think about what is not happening is a cognitive achievement that comes at an emotional cost.

The study found that people who daydreamed less and were more likely to focus on the task they were doing in the present moment were more likely to be happy.

The question is, how can you train your brain to live more in the present moment so you can more effectively clear your mind?

According to neuroscientist David Rock, taking small moments throughout the day to focus on your senses and youll direct experience network in your brain compared to your default brain network.

This is why I believe micro-meditations can be effective.

The key here is to focus on your breath for 1-3 minutes every hour throughout the day.

Its best to do equal breathing which is inhaling for 4 seconds through your and nose and then exhaling for 4 seconds .

Meditate For 15 Minutes

If youd asked me a couple of years ago, I would have laughed at the idea of meditating every day.

Times change. After trying it out and failing miserably, I decided that I needed to learn what all the fuss is about.

Thanks to constant training, I became better at gathering my thoughts learning how to subdue my surroundings. After many fruitless meditation challenges, I finally started to savor the benefits.

Dont get me wrong, I am no guru. Ive simply internalized a technique that allows me to shut down my brain and to empty my mind for a short period.

For 15 minutes, I dont ruminate or ponder. I simply let an air of tranquility take hold of my conscience.

How does this work in practice? Sit down, close your eyes, and concentrate all of your energy on visualizing a quiet, peaceful place. I always paint an image of a large waterfall in my head.

With enough training, youll be able to forget everything but the waterfall, and this will rid your mind of any stress and unease.

Dont expect to get this right on the first attempt. Start with one minute per day and work your way up from there. After a while, youll manage to sedate your thoughts for 15 minutes without pausing.
