Three Rules of Work: Out of clutter find simplicity From discord find harmony In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.Albert Einstein

Think simple as my old master used to say meaning reduce the whole of its parts into the simplest terms, getting back to first principles.Frank Lloyd Wright

The daily work we do in school, at work or in a business can easily become overwhelming, ineffective and suck the energy and joy out of what you are doing.

So how can you work in a lighter, simpler way that helps you to get more of what truly matters done in less time and with less stress?

Let me share 12 habits that I’ve discovered over the years that help me to do just that.

1. Prepare your day the evening before.

Pack your bag or suitcase. Pack the leftovers from your dinner in a container and put it in the fridge. Put your keys, wallet etc. in a place where you can easily find them as you head out.

This preparation will help you to have a less stressful morning.

2. Be 5-10 minutes early for appointments.

This will make your time of travel during the day into a time of relaxation and recharging. Instead of a time of stress and anxiety.

Plus, people tend to like when other people are on time.

3. Work on just one thing at a time.

It will be easier to focus and to do a good job.

And to do it in less time compared to if you try to multi-task .

4. Work in a cone of silence.

Shut the door to your office. Put your cell phone in silent mode and put it in a drawer.

Prepare Ahead Of Time As Much As Possible

How to Make Applying to College Less Stressful

The most stressful time of the day for workers is the morning, or when they start their shift.

You canât always prepare everything ahead of time. If someone leaves a mess when you arrive for your shift, thereâs not much you can do about it other than try to work with them and get them to do better.

But, wherever possible, prep ahead of time. Think of it like this: how you start your work day sets the tone for the rest of it. If you start it in a panic, a rush, the whole day is going to be stressful. Itâll feel as if you never get caught up or on good footing.

Preparing ahead of time might be:

  • Setting up tools or products that youâll need to use.
  • Mentally considering challenges youâll face and how youâll diffuse them.
  • Exercising, or physically preparing yourself for the work you need to do to avoid physical injury or tiredness.

Time Management Tips For Reducing Stress At Work

  • Create a balanced schedule. Analyze your schedule, your responsibilities and your daily tasks. All work and no play is a recipe for burnout. Try to find a balance between work and family, social activities and lonely activities, daily responsibilities and downtime.
  • Avoid overburdening yourself. Too often, we underestimate how long it will take. If you have too much on your plate, distinguish between “shoulds” and “musts.” Place tasks that are not really necessary at the bottom of the list or delete them altogether.
  • If you’re a commuter, try to leave earlier in the morning. A mere 10-15 minutes can be the difference between frantically rushing to your desk and having time to ease into the day. Don’t increase your stress levels by running late.
  • Plan regular breaks. Take short breaks throughout the day to go for a walk or to sit back and clear your head. Also, try to get away from your desk or work for lunch.

Be Clear On Requirements

A factor known to contribute to job burnout is unclear requirements for employees. If you dont know exactly what is expected of you, or if the requirements for your role keep changing with little notice, you might become extremely stressed.

If you find yourself never knowing if what you are doing is enough, it may help to have a talk with your supervisor. You can take the time to go over expectations and discuss strategies for meeting them. This can relieve stress for both of you!

How Stress Affects Company Productivity

One of the most common ways stress affects the overall production of a company is through absenteeism. Stress-related symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, high blood pressure and headaches take a toll on the person, causing even those with good attendance to begin missing more and more work.

These are some other ways stress may affect your companys productivity:

  • Staff turnover: Stress in a company may lead to restless employees who have the desire to find a less stressful job. This ultimately creates problems with an increase in staff turnover, which forces your company to put more funding and time into hiring and training new employees.
  • Tardiness: Almost every company has a few people who occasionally struggle with being on time, but when employees who are typically punctual begin to have an increase in tardiness, it may be an indication of stress. This may be due to the fact that stress and anxiety often interrupt sleep, which makes it more difficult to wake up in the morning.
  • Peer relationships: Unfortunately, stress also prevents otherwise energetic conversationalists from interacting with their peers. This is often due to them isolating themselves and being deprived of the energy required to make small talk or polite conversations. The lack of peer relationships and communication may eventually impact the companys productivity.
