Sometimes stress seems like something we just have to accept. In order to get ahead in this day and age, you’ve gotta be running, running, running. Unfortunately, it’s not good for our health — mentally and physically. Take the following steps to manage your stress and get more out of your day.

Embrace The Adrenaline And Treat It As Positive

Fortunately, there is evidence that some level of stress is actually helpful, and can improve performanceprovided you believe that this is the case.

Elite athletes, for example, often believe that adrenaline, one of the main stress hormones, is helpful in improving performance. It is, after all, the flight or fight hormone, so you can harness it to help you to fight. Changing your mindset to embrace adrenaline can be a good start to changing how you view stress, especially if you have taken steps to reduce and avoid it more generally.

Asking For Help And Allow Help

Youd be amazed at how many people are willing to help. Often, we are the problem that is disallowing help from happening through our limited thinking. We think they will say no, and so we dont ask.

Just give it a try. Ask for help, and be prepared to be amazed at the generosity that others are willing to provide.

When my husband was out of town for a week, I asked friends for their help and people willingly came to help me watch Ryan, so I could have some midweek breaks. One friend -who works as a nanny- even agreed at a discount, to sleep over one night and take the middle-of-the-night-shift for Ryan. This made my life much easier and more manageable.

Also through asking, my mother-in-law agreed to come watch the baby twice a week, so I could have focused and uninterrupted creative time. I am so thankful.

People are amazing. Just ask, and be open to receiving what others are willing to provide. You never know what will happen. Just think, whats the worst thing that can happen? They say no. Not a big deal.

How Do I Let My Thoughts Come And Go

No matter how hard you try, you are going to have thoughts that enter your mind and seemingly refuse to leave. How can you let them come and go? It can take some time to combat self-doubt, catastrophic predictions, and other problematic thoughts when your brain seems to refuse to delegate tasks that are helpful and instead focuses on the bad. However, there are some ways.

  • When they come, distract yourself. Whether its looking at your phone, taking a few deep breaths, exercising, immediately find a way to distract yourself and make it a habit.
  • Usually, these thoughts are worries. Are they valid worries? If so, think of ways to control them. Some people become control freaks of their own mind, separating the helpful from the unhelpful, and thats a good thing.
  • Substitute that thought for something better. Even if it comes back, keep substituting.
  • Seek help from a therapist. When people have positive things happening, but they worry constantly, they may have other mental health problems they are unaware of. Seeking help from a therapist may be your best bet to stop those thoughts.

Lurking Or Oversharing On Social Media

When youre overlurking on social media, youre comparing yourself to others, which causes stress, says Stephanie Mansour, a certified confidence and lifestyle coach for women and CEO of Step It Up with Steph. Youre grading your self-worth and self-esteem based on what you see from other people, not on your own benchmarks for success and happiness.

Oversharing on social media can also make us very vulnerable, making us more likely to get hurt, according to Lang.

You should really have people earn your trust and respect before you open up and share, Lang says.

Avoid this stressor by setting personal boundaries and only allowing yourself a certain amount of time each day to check social media, Lang says.

Dealing With Burnout Tip : Turn To Other People

When youre burned out, problems seem insurmountable, everything looks bleak, and its difficult to muster up the energy to care, let alone take action to help yourself. But you have a lot more control over stress than you may think. There are positive steps you can take to deal with overwhelming stress and get your life back into balance. One of the most effective is to reach out to others.

Social contact is natures antidote to stress and talking face to face with a good listener is one of the fastest ways to calm your nervous system and relieve stress. The person you talk to doesnt have to be able to fix your stressors they just have to be a good listener, someone wholl listen attentively without becoming distracted or expressing judgment.

Reach out to those closest to you, such as your partner, family, and friends. Opening up wont make you a burden to others. In fact, most friends and loved ones will be flattered that you trust them enough to confide in them, and it will only strengthen your friendship. Try not to think about whats burning you out and make the time you spend with loved ones positive and enjoyable.

Be more sociable with your coworkers. Developing friendships with people you work with can help buffer you from job burnout. When you take a break, for example, instead of directing your attention to your smartphone, try engaging your colleagues. Or schedule social events together after work.

Tip : Distinguish Between Solvable And Unsolvable Worries

Research shows that while youre worrying, you temporarily feel less anxious. Running over the problem in your head distracts you from your emotions and makes you feel like youre getting something accomplished. But worrying and problem solving are two very different things.

Problem solving involves evaluating a situation, coming up with concrete steps for dealing with it, and then putting the plan into action. Worrying, on the other hand, rarely leads to solutions. No matter how much time you spend dwelling on worst-case scenarios, youre no more prepared to deal with them should they actually happen.

Here are some things you’re unable to control.

  • The weather. Stop worrying about the weather ruining your day when you can’t control it.
  • The past. It’s there, it’s over, and there’s no way to change it until someone invents a time machine.
  • The future to an extent. While you can take action to have a better future, the future is, in the end, unpredictable.
  • Traffic. If you’re worried about being stuck in traffic, remember that you can’t have control over other people and how they drive.
  • Certain physical aspects of yourself. You can’t control how tall you are, for example.
  • People’s minds. While you can offer your two cents and that can influence their decisions, a lot of people are set in their own ways, and your concerns about someone else’s life shouldn’t dominate your thoughts in most circumstances.

Tip : Interrupt The Worry Cycle

If you worry excessively, it can seem like negative thoughts are running through your head on endless repeat. You may feel like youre spiraling out of control, going crazy, or about to burn out under the weight of all this anxiety. But there are steps you can take right now to interrupt all those anxious thoughts and give yourself a time out from relentless worrying.

Get up and get moving. Exercise is a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment because it releases endorphins which relieve tension and stress, boost energy, and enhance your sense of well-being. Even more importantly, by really focusing on how your body feels as you move, you can interrupt the constant flow of worries running through your head. Pay attention to the sensation of your feet hitting the ground as you walk, run, or dance, for example, or the rhythm of your breathing, or the feeling of the sun or wind on your skin.

Take a yoga or tai chi class. By focusing your mind on your movements and breathing, practicing yoga or tai chi keeps your attention on the present, helping to clear your mind and lead to a relaxed state.

Practice progressive muscle relaxation. This can help you break the endless loop of worrying by focusing your mind on your body instead of your thoughts. By alternately tensing and then releasing different muscle groups in your body, you release muscle tension in your body. And as your body relaxes, your mind will follow.

Recognising Your Stress Triggers

If you’re not sure what’s causing your stress, keep a diary and make a note of stressful episodes for two-to-four weeks. Then review it to spot the triggers.

Things you might want to write down include:

  • the date, time and place of a stressful episode
  • what you were doing
  • a stress rating

You can use the diary to:

  • work out what triggers your stress
  • work out how you operate under pressure
  • develop better coping mechanisms

Doctors sometimes recommend keeping a stress diary to help them diagnose stress.

  • Have an herbal tea or take a bath.
  • If you cant sleep, get up and do something to make you feel calm. Then, try to go to bed. You could spend that extra energy into more productive actions, like writing, but make sure you do something that makes you tired.
