Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problem in the U.S., affecting about one out of five people at any given time, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Anxiety can take many forms generalized anxiety disorder , obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder.

While medications to treat these anxiety conditions are often an important component in the management of anxiety, there is also many natural, do-it-yourself techniques that can help calm you down, either in place of medications or as a supplement to them.

Next time you’re too tense to cope, consider trying one of these natural options for relief.

1. Laugh it off. Cultivate a good sense of humor and laugh, says Karen Lynn Cassiday, PhD, president-elect of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America and a clinical psychologist in Chicago. “Even if you do a fake laugh, you get an instant hit of dopamine,” says Dr. Cassiday. Dopamine is a brain chemical that controls feelings of reward and pleasure.

If you’re too tense to laugh on your own, try using technology, she suggests. For example, find a laugh track phone app. Just google phone apps for laughing.

Anxiety & Depression : How to Relieve Anxiety Without Medications

Whereas specific phobias, SAD, and separation anxiety disorder are common in younger people, PDA and GAD are relatively rare. There are some randomized, placebo-controlled studies of pharmacotherapy for anxiety disorders in children and adolescents showing efficacy of sertraline, fluoxetine, and duloxetine in young patients with GAD, of venlafaxine and paroxetine in SAD, and of sertraline, fluvoxamine, and fluoxetine in mixed samples, including patients with separation anxiety disorder, GAD, and SAD.88 However, little is known about the value of long-term treatment.89 The combination of CBT and sertraline was found to be more effective than both treatment modalities alone.90

For children and youths with separation anxiety disorder, several treatment studies exist.95 However, no controlled studies on the treatment of adults with this disorder could be traced.

There is also a paucity of treatment studies for children with selective mutism. Small studies have shown that psychotherapeutic approaches were at least better than waitlist controls.96,97 One review indicated that only two very small placebo-controlled drug studies showed efficacy of the SSRIs fluoxetine and sertraline.98

Why Pursue Treatment For Anxiety Without Medication

Although anxiety disorders are common and treatable, certain medications for anxiety may cause undesired side effects, and some may worry about what these adverse affects from medication might feel like. Seeking consultation from your doctor about medication and all of the potential side effects is important. Research and ask as many questions as possible to avoid complications and figure out what works best for you.

Anxiety medications such as benzodiazepines may have adverse effects like weakness, slurred speech, and anterograde amnesia. Therapists should also warn patients in advance about possible risk of tolerance, which can lead to rebound anxiety or withdrawal symptoms upon abrupt discontinuation.1,2

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor can have side effects like increased anxiety or agitation, insomnia, gastrointestinal problems, headaches, sweating, and sexual dysfunction.3 While these side effects arent necessarily common, theyre a reason why many people make the decision to receive treatment for anxiety without medication.

Diet And Nutrition Changes

Anxiety Treatment Naturally Without Drugs

Some people find that changing their diet helps reduce anxiety. Options to consider include:

  • Reducing caffeine: Try reducing caffeine intake, especially late in the day or before bed. Caffeine is a stimulant, which means it can speed up activity in the brain and body, making a person feel restless and anxious. Several studies suggest a link between caffeine and anxiety, including a 2015 analysis of schoolchildren that linked high caffeine consumption to higher stress and anxiety.
  • Drinking less alcohol: Though few studies have directly assessed the link between alcohol and anxiety, many find that people self-medicate with alcohol. Some drinkers report an improvement in anxiety symptoms when they stop drinking or reduce their alcohol consumption.
  • Keeping a food log: Keep a food log to assess whether anxiety is worse after eating certain foods. A 2019 study found a correlation between a high intake of saturated fats and added sugars and higher overall anxiety in adults. The study suggests diet may affect mental health, but it did not establish a causal link.

Many foods may also contain nutrients that could help reduce symptoms of anxiety.

Support groups help people with anxiety feel less alone. They may also offer practical wisdom that can help a person find the right provider, talk to their loved ones about their anxiety, or manage the process of seeking workplace accommodations.

Natural Remedies To Consider For Treating Anxiety

Here is how to go beyond conventional medicine to help those who suffer from the leading mental health disorder in the United States.

Anxiety of all types has become an epidemic in the United States, so much so that it has overtaken depression as the leading mental health disorder. It is estimated that 40 million Americans struggle with anxiety, with more than half of all US college students suffering from the disorder.

Recently, I came across a new nickname for this country that I found to be sad but probably accurate when considering the mental health of our nations general population: The United States of Anxiety.

Where is all this anxiety coming from? A mixture of panicky and negative news from the many media outlets, social-media pressures, the seemingly never-ending war or threats of new wars, mass shootings, economic concerns, and so on.

Although there are many prescription medications that help treat the symptoms of anxiety, we may want to consider more natural remedies if a long-term solution is needed.

Benzodiazepines are effective but can be addictive, as they share the same brain reward pathways as opioids and cannabinoids. Couple that with symptoms of benzodiazepine withdrawal that can occur upon discontinuation, and that may be a recipe for more harm than good. With benzodiazepines, what could be a suitable short-term anxiety treatment option, may quickly turn into a long-term course of therapy.

Break Up With Caffeine

A cup of coffee, chocolate, or an ice-cold Coke might help you feel better. But if caffeine is your go-to drug of choice, your anxiety could worsen.

Caffeine gives the nervous system a jolt, which can boost energy levels. But when under pressure, this nervous energy can induce an anxiety attack. Now, the idea of giving up your favorite caffeinated beverage might raise your heart rate and induce anxiety as you read this, but you dont have to stop cold turkey or give up caffeine completely. Its all about moderation.

Rather than four cups of coffee a day, scale back to one or two normal-sized cups a day normal as in 8 ounces, not 16 or 32 ounces. Give it a test run and see how you feel. As you wean yourself, slowly introduce other beverages into your diet such as decaffeinated herbal tea, which can calm your mind and nerves.

A glass of wine might seem like it will help you relax, but alcohol and recreational drugs can exacerbate anxiety. Caffeine can exacerbate the jittery, edgy feeling common among people experiencing heightened anxiety. Reduce or avoid self-medicating with caffeine, alcohol, or drugs, Dr. Zablow recommends. Resist isolating and inactivity.

Additionally, both alcohol and caffeine can disrupt the sleep cycle, which leads to less restful sleep. Being tired may exacerbate feelings of anxiety and may decrease the ability to deal with everyday stressors.

Unresponsiveness To Standard Treatments

Before considering a patient to be treatment unresponsive, it should be ascertained that the diagnosis was correct, adherence to the treatment plan was sufficient, the dose prescribed had covered the full range, and there had been a trial period of adequate duration. When patients report previous treatment failures, it often turns out that a drug was only prescribed in the lowest dose or was stopped within the first 2 weeks due to side effects that occurred in the initial phase before the patient could experience improvement.

Elderly patients may take longer to show a response. Table III contains options in case of drug inefficacy or intolerance. In patients who are unresponsive to psychotropic drugs, the addition of CBT is generally recommended.85

A combination of antidepressants and benzodiazepines is sometimes used in treatment-refractory cases.

When all standard treatments have failed, the off-label use of drugs may be considered, for example, drugs licensed for another anxiety disorder or that are not licensed but have shown efficacy in clinical studies. Such drugs include quetiapine and agomelatine.

Take Steps To Reduce Stress And Anxiety Naturally

According to a 2005 report published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, 18 percent of the adult population in the United States suffers from an anxiety disorder. A 1999 study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychology found that the treatment of anxiety related disorders costs the United States over $42 billion each year.

Benzodiazepines, the class of prescription drugs typically used to treat anxiety, can be addictive and potentially dangerous. As the author of a report published in a 1995 edition of Psychiatric Annals explained, benzodiazepines are potentially addictive and can cause psychological and pharmacological dependence. A person can become dependent on benzodiazepines after using them for only a few weeks, and long-term users are at an increased risk, according to the report.

Fortunately, there are natural ways to relieve anxiety without risky medications. Read on to learn more.
