Reduce Caffeine And Alcohol

For many of us, a cup of coffee at the start of the day gets us going, and a glass of wine in the evening will help us relax.

But too much of either can seriously affect our bodies ability to manage anxiety.

Caffeine can trigger cortisol production, the hormone that triggers the fight or flight stress response.

And as for alcohol, drinking too much will change your brain chemistry over time, thus lowering its ability to cope with stress.

Introduce More Hops To Your Routine

Hops might be most well known as one of the main ingredients in beer, but the plant has also been used as an herbal remedy for stress for centuries.

Although hops doesn’t appear to lower cortisol levels directly, the bitter acids that give hops their signature taste have a calming effect that can help alleviate stress and the muscle tension that comes along with it.

In addition, hops can interact with the neurotransmitter GABA. GABA plays a role in brain signaling and nervous system activity and can contribute to an overall calming effect.*

Hops has also been shown to promote good sleep quality, and better sleep means a steadier stress response in most cases.

Since alcohol can have a negative effect on stress , it’s best to forgo the beer and get your hops from non-alcoholic sources, like herbal teas.

Facing A Family Threat

It all came to a head when my husband had an emergency appendectomy. The doctor said his appendix had likely been calcified since childhood.

The original surgery required a 2-day hospital stay . He came home and felt awful for another week. He was still in pain, wasnt eating, wasnt sleeping well, and couldnt do much of anything but lay on the couch.

At his follow-up appointment, the doctor discovered my husband had developed a secondary infection that hed picked up in the hospital during his surgery recovery. They found an abscess where the appendix had been and drained about 8 ounces of puss from it. They put in a drain that stayed for about a week.

A culture of the puss revealed 4 types of bacteria including the flesh-eating bacteria c-diff. This time, he had to stay in the hospital for 8 days, and was on IV broad-spectrum antibiotics every 6 hours.

For me, this meant another week of being away from the kids, and in the hospital with him. When I started getting a sore throat and flu-like symptoms, I was put on an antibiotic too, to make sure that I hadnt picked up any of his resistant bacteria and that I wouldnt carry it home to the kids or my nursing baby.

I was definitely stressed, to say the least, but Id always worked well under pressure, so I brushed it off and figured Id relax and catch up on sleep when things got back to normal.

Nutritional Support For Anxiety Relief

Herbal remedies can help manage acute stressors, but sustained anxiety relief usually requires a multitiered approach. Integrative psychiatrist Henry Emmons, MD, author of The Chemistry of Calm, advises including nutritional support in any anxiety-relief plan. He recommends these four supplements:

1. Magnesium: This nutrient is essential for the production of serotonin and the support of GABA. But most important, Emmons says, nerve-cell membranes use magnesium to relax after theyve fired.

This relaxation is crucial because it calms brain activity. I use a lot of magnesium for people suffering from anxiety and sleep issues, he says. Studies show roughly half of all Americans arent getting enough magnesium from food alone. Emmons recommends a daily dose of 400 to 600 mg in the form of magnesium citrate, threonate, succinate, or glycinate.

2. 5-HTP: Made from the amino acid tryptophan, 5-HTP is a precursor of serotonin, which also helps with depression, anxietys co-conspirator. 5-HTP also boosts melatonin, which is essential for good sleep. If you were making a serotonin pie crust, 5-HTP would be analogous to the flour, says Emmons. 5-HTP is crucial for getting the soothing brain chemical serotonin to be more available. He recommends 50 to 100 mg up to three times a day.

He recommends 25 to 100 mg daily of B6 50 to 200 mcg of B12 and 400 to 800 mg of folate.

Physical Activity Is Essential

Gifts For Stress Relief

Sitting at your desk all day can dull your emotions and make you irritable. Try to stay as active as you can, such as getting up to get a glass of water when you are thirsty instead of keeping a bottle with you. Staying active can increase the production of endorphins, thus helping to get rid of Stress, according to Anxiety and Depression of America.

Eat More Whole Foods Less Processed Foods

We all know that a balanced diet helps us feel better and can protect us from a huge array of diseases.

But if you feel like you need to diet, this can cause you more anxiety! Instead, experiment with nutrient-dense whole foods that you truly enjoy, and focus on eating those as often as possible.

Lean proteins such as fish, organic chicken, beans, and eggs provide fuel for your body and brain to keep your energy levels constant.

Asparagus, leafy greens, meat, and avocado contain nutrients that can reduce the symptoms of anxiety, as can omega-3-rich foods like fish, green leafy vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

Even when youre eating a healthy diet, it can still be difficult to get all the nutrients you need, which is why it can be helpful to take natural supplements for anxiety.

What Happens To Your Body When You Are Stressed

Weve all heard about the adrenal gland. The gland, which is actually a pair of glands, is located on the top of each kidney below the diaphragm and is responsible for the states of stress and balance in the body.

Did we suddenly hear an alarm? The adrenal gland goes into action!

It is instructed by the brain to secrete stress hormones: cortisol and adrenaline, which quickly prepare our bodies for the new state of emergency .

This process of energetic alertness requires a chain of reactions, which begins with the breakdown of fats, proteins and blood sugar, and continues with heart pulse acceleration, an increase in blood pressure, the secretion of minerals from the bones, and more.

As a result, our body becomes fully alert, the ability to think improves, the lungs get more oxygen, the appetite goes down and the digestive system lowers activity.

Insomnia And Addiction Withdrawal Aid

As an herbal hypnotic , passionflower is regularly used in formulas to relieve insomnia, especially insomnia caused by racing thoughts.

Passionflower gently coaxes an overthinking mind and stressed out body to sleep.

Skilled herbalists combine it with other herbs like hops, such as in Sleep Nightly Tonic, to increase the benefits.

I find its helpful for people whose sleep is disturbed by mild palpitations, hot flashes, or anxiety.
