How To Stop Being So Stressed

Spend Time With Friends And Family

How to stop feeling anxious about anxiety | Tim Box | TEDxFolkestone

Social support from friends and family can help you get through stressful times.

Being part of a friend network gives you a sense of belonging and self-worth, which can help you in tough times.

One study found that for women in particular, spending time with friends and children helps release oxytocin, a natural stress reliever. This effect is called tend and befriend, and is the opposite of the fight-or-flight response .

Keep in mind that both men and women benefit from friendship.

Another study found that men and women with the fewest social connections were more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety .

Stress Management Isnt Just About Stress Relief

Heres the thing: learning how to reduce stress wont help all that much if you cant keep stress levels low for the long-haul.

Stress has a ripple effect . The key to effective stress management is to help reduce much of this ripple effect. That will ultimately help you to remain calm, think rationally and respond appropriately so that you can more quickly bounce back instead of allowing stress to take control of you and emotionally react.

And thats what control is really all about. Controlling your thoughts and emotions. You cant be in control of your life if you dont first learn to manage your stress levels.

Ways To Prevent Stress Buildup

There’s no avoiding the stress of everyday life. Schoolwork, responsibilities at home, busy schedules, other people’s expectations, disappointments, deadlines, social drama: all of these can create tension.

Everyday stressors have a way of piling up if we don’t keep them in check. Adding these 5 simple actions to your regular routine can help you avoid that “bogged down by stress” feeling. The key word is “routine.” You need to make sure you keep doing these to enjoy the benefits:

1. Balance responsibilities with activities you enjoy . It’s all about balance: all work and no play is bad. But if your schedule is so crammed with activities that there’s no time for homework, that’ll stress you out too.

2. Manage responsibilities. Use a calendar or planning app to keep track of assignments, chores, practices, and other obligations. Of course, planning is no good if you don’t actually do what you plan: Managing stress also means regular studying, keeping on top of assignments, and overcoming procrastination. Take time to reflect a bit every day and think about how things are going. What do you need to work on? Do? Make time for?

5. Make time to exercise every day. It’s hard to feel anxious when you’re taking deep breaths on a run, feeling the rush of a downhill bike ride, or playing a pickup game with friends. Exercise doesn’t just take our mind off of stress it releases chemicals in our brains that make us feel better.

Break Out The Bubble Gum

Feel like you’re becoming unglued? Grab a stick of gum. Research suggests that chewing gum can help relieve both stress and anxiety. It may be that the rhythmic motion of chewing helps boost blood flow to the brain. An alternative theory suggests that it’s the taste and smell of the gum that elicits the relaxation response. Next time you think, “I can’t stop stressing,” grab a stick of gum as a stress relief technique that is inexpensive, effective, and you can do it virtually everywhere.

Ways To Get Your Cortisol Levels Down

Stress is a sneaky thing. It can curl up inside you and grow like a Chia Pet until all the sprouts have grown out of control. Sometimes stress can manifest into physical symptoms, like temporary hives, one-day headaches, or long-term weight gain.

One simple way to deal is to let your body and mind reset. Take a nap yep, even 10 minutes of napping can help. If you were sleepy in the first place, the lack of sleep can make it harder to manage stress.

Fortunately, there are tips and tricks that can help you get your cortisol levels down. If you need quick tips to keep your heart beating at a more manageable rate, read our ways to calm stress in five minutes or less.

Eliminate The Phrase I Will Be Happy When

Sudden happiness does not exist and the phrase I will be happy when indicates that happiness comes when you get what it is you believe will make you happy.

Many people think that if they win the Lottery, then they will be happy this is not true. In a consumer driven society of today, it is easy to fall into the trap of comparing your happiness to the material gains and success of others.

Be careful that you dont equate happiness with momentary pleasure because if you do, you will eventually feel conflicted and discontent. It is these feelings will take you to a place of sadness.

Stop Putting Off Exercise

Exercise can help you to feel less stressed in the short run and build your resilience toward stress in the long run. Many people know this but have a difficult time getting off the couch on a regular basis, especially when stressed, or too busy to get onto the couch in the first place.

It’s ironic that sometimes when we would most benefit from exercise, that’s the last thing we want to do. Push yourself to do it!

I dont know about you but I go through ebbs and flows with my spirituality. I used to beat myself up about it, but now, I just wait it out. When I dont feel like meditating or reading inspirational books or journaling, I give myself a week or two.

Then, I take a small step to get myself back into it like committing to reading 2 pages or writing one paragraph or meditating for 5 minutes.

Set Boundaries Around Your Inbox

When email first became popular, it was easy to limit how much time we spent with our inbox. You checked it while at your office computer and didnt think about it again once you clocked out in the evening. But now we have access to our email 24/7, thanks to smartphones and other mobile devices. And whether youre spending time with your family or running errands, as soon as you see that new email notification, youre tempted to respond immediately.

While you might think answering emails right away makes you a better employee, the stress of always being available quickly takes its toll. Pick a few times a day when your attention is dedicated to your inbox. Having planned email breaks allows you to stay focused throughout the day on other tasks without your inbox getting out of control.

Tip : Connect To Others

There is nothing more calming than spending quality time with another human being who makes you feel safe and understood. In fact, face-to-face interaction triggers a cascade of hormones that counteracts the bodys defensive fight-or-flight response. Its natures natural stress reliever . So make it a point to connect regularlyand in personwith family and friends.

Keep in mind that the people you talk to dont have to be able to fix your stress. They simply need to be good listeners. And try not to let worries about looking weak or being a burden keep you from opening up. The people who care about you will be flattered by your trust. It will only strengthen your bond.

Of course, its not always realistic to have a pal close by to lean on when you feel overwhelmed by stress, but by building and maintaining a network of close friends you can improve your resiliency to lifes stressors.

For instance, in the middle of 2020 I took several long-haul international flights. My primary emotions were gratitude and excitement to see my children who were living across the world. Yet leading up to each flight, numerous people told me how stressed they were at the very thought of getting on a plane. Much less flying 24 hours. My point: flying in a pandemic is not stressful. Its the assessment people feel about flying in a pandemic that can create stress. So too, having a job that places many demands on you isnt, by default, stressful. Its how you feel about your ability to meet those demands. It explains why what may be terrifying for one is exhilarating for another.
