This is in contrast to real life, where crying may often have a considerable impact on the situation.
Furthermore, it is arguable whether in these two types of studies , exactly the same concept is measured. When retrospectively reporting mood changes that followed their crying, people likely are biased by implicit lay theories, which pose that crying brings mood improvement and relief . Relatedly, it cannot be ruled out that people more easily remember crying episodes that are associated with mood improvement or that they are more willing to report positive than negative crying experiences in retrospective studies .

It can communicate your feelings to others and some studies even suggest that it signals you need social support. Crying can also be an emotional or behavioral response to something you see, hear or think. You see, Victoria was a professional powerhouse. Her determination, smarts, and savvy rocketed her to the top of the food and beverage industry. Victorias peers regarded her as influential within the company, which was further evidenced by a recent promotion to managing director of her division.

Crying is entirely normal and healthy, but many of us dont want to cry in front of other people. When we dont want to cry in front of other people, is there anything we can do to save face?
Ad Vingerhoets, the author of Why Only Humans Weep: Unravelling the Mysteries of Tears, said that there are two distinct components to crying: sounds of vocal distress and the production of tears. Dr. Vingerhoets, a professor of clinical psychology at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, said that distress calls are common among human and animal infants, a product of evolution alerting parents to their offsprings location and discomfort. But vocal distress noises can also attract predators. Humans have a prolonged childhood compared to other animals, so perhaps as a protective mechanism, he theorized, we developed tears as a visible way to signal suffering.
How To Cry Without Feeling Overwhelmed
In some cases, the experience of crying can make you feel worse, not better. If at any point during the exercise you feel overwhelmed and would like to stop, know that it is perfectly normal and okay. Strategies to help yourself stop crying include:
- Bring up a peaceful image or a pleasant memory that makes you feel calm.
- Take ten slow, deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
- Try progressive muscle relaxation to get in touch with your body.
- Remind yourself that what you are feeling is normal and that you can come back to the stressful memory at another time.
- Take a walk and get some fresh air.
- Listen to a guided imagery podcast or watch a guided imagery video.

Try to pull yourself out of your head and assess the source of your tears. If another person is the cause of your tears, it may not be what they said, but how you interpreted their words, said Dr. Jerry Bubrick, a psychologist, to Oprah.com. Anxiety crying and crying spells can change from day to day, and from moment to moment.
Why Some People Cry More Than Others
Some people are more likely to cry than others. For starters, women cry 60% more than men. Experts donât exactly know why.
It could be because men:
- Have smaller tear ducts
- Usually have more testosterone, which may inhibit crying
- Have less prolactin, a hormone that might promote tears
- Are often encouraged not to cry
Studies show that people with secure relationship attachments are more comfortable showing emotion. They may cry more in normal and healthy settings, while those with insecure relationship attachments may cry at inappropriate times. Similar research suggests that people who avoid close relationships with others are less likely to cry and try harder to avoid tears. Those with clingy or dependent styles cry more often than those with secure relationships.

From infancy through adulthood, crying serves an important purpose. Aside from eliciting a caretaking response in others, crying can help you physically and emotionally release tension and stress.
Often, crying happens spontaneously. And sometimes, it happens despite a strong desire not to cry. But there may be other times when you want to cry and the tears just won’t come. So how can you make yourself cry? There are a few techniques you can use to get the tears flowing.
Stop The Thoughts That Are Making You Cry
If you cant physically get away from the situation, that doesnt mean you cant mentally get away. You can borrow from an intervention technique sometimes used in therapy called thought stopping or thought replacement. Its exactly what it sounds like. Whatever it is thats provoking your crying response, try to put that out of your mind and think about something totally unrelated instead.
Dudley recommends having a go-to replacement thought. Maybe its your dog, who always makes you laugh. I love my dog so much, you might think to drown out the thoughts about how poorly your co-worker just treated you. Shes going to be so happy when I come home.
Youll want to practice this one in lower-stakes situations before you try to rely on it in a crucial moment, Dudley says, because itll take practice to do it successfully. In the beginning you might keep hopping back, but practice really does help, she says. Even so, it may not work for everybody in every situation.
