What Does God Say About Stress

Bible Characters Who Were Stressed

What Does God Say About Stress?

There are tons of examples of bible characters who were stressed. What set these people apart, especially Jesus, is how they reacted to stressful situations. They each put their trust and faith in God in the midst of difficult situations.

Job had everything a good family, a good name and plenty of wealth. Suddenly it was all stripped away because Satan asked for permission to alter Jobs good fortune to test his faith. He lost everything his children, his wealth, his health and even his relationships with his wife and friends.

And what did Job do? He did the exact opposite of what Satan wanted him to do He praised the name of God.

At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: Naked I come from my mothers womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away may the name of the Lord be praised. .

While Job did question God and why he was suffering, he eventually repented and humbly knelt before God in faith.

He was anointed by God to rule over Israel. Yet he was tormented by King Saul as a result of jealousy. King Saul chased David for many years which meant that David was constantly on the run and hiding in caves.

He was fleeing from death and in great anguish and despair. Yet he cried out to the Lord to help him from his affliction. Similarly to Job, he turned to praise the name of the Lord and ask for his mercy.

A Prayer To Relieve Stress

14 Bible Verses About Anxiety Scriptures For Anxiety And

Dear Father,

We humbly come before you, stretched and strained, trying with all our might to unclench our teeth, relax our shoulders, let go of the many things creating tension in ourselves and with others throughout our day.

But the truth is, you call us to come to you, not out of our own might and struggles, but out of your loving invitation to lay our burdens at your feet, and rest in the arms of Jesus. Because of your son, because of who you show yourself to be, we can know and believe that we are made whole and complete.

Through the indescribable power of Jesus death and resurrection, we no longer have to worry whether we are enough to face lifes challenges both big and small. Not only can we release our stress and worry to you, we can hope and rejoice that you make us victorious!

All the same, some days its hard for us in our humanness to remember the greatness of your power and victory over our infirmities. Because of this we pray for your loving grace and comforting hand to still our fast-beating hearts when we fail, or our circumstances fall apart. When disappointments or complications threaten our peace, we ask for your peace-giving presence to bring us back to that sweet spot of love and trust that is only found with you, so that we might go forward in worship and singing instead of fear and defensiveness.

Thank you for your heart for us, God.

In Your Name,Amen

Read A Psalm Of Lament

Often, we think of the Book of Psalms as being hymns of praise and rejoicing. But there is a category of psalms that expresses lament. We dont do lament very well. We seem to be better at complaining. A lament has a purpose. Complaining does not. A lament expresses sorrow, failure, disappointment, and loss, but it also articulates the power, salvation, and love of God. A psalm of lament is cathartic and healing. Here is a weeks worth of laments from the psalms 3, 12, 22, 44, 57, 80, 86. If you really want to enhance this, FaceTime a friend and read one together.

God has created us to be communal people. The ancient practice of looking upward, inward, and outward is a great reminder that we can get through this together.

by Rev. Ken Dill on March 27, 2020

COVID-19 has brought us to an uncertain place.

Many people find themselves in unfamiliar territory. We may be working from home instead of the office. We may be teaching children who are no longer in school. Uncertainty ushers anxiety and fear into the theater of our mind to sit beside us while our eyes are glued to the screen.

    We feel trapped.

But we do not have to remain in that place.

There are tools to help us move to a better place. We are familiar with them prayer, scripture and devotionals, walks, conversations with a friend, the off-switch on our TV, or the power button on our electronic devices. These are options that may not be so familiar to us. Lets take a look at some of those.
