What Essential Oils Are Good For Stress And Anxiety

How Essential Oils May Help Anxiety

Essential Oils for Stress and Anxiety

Most compounds have to be digested or injected in order to enter the bloodstream.

However, the phytochemicals in essential oils, like linalool and linalyl acetate, are small enough to pass through the skin and nasal cavities.

From there, they can readily travel across the blood-brain barrier to potentially relieve anxiety.

People with anxiety often have concurrent digestive issues that inhibit nutrient absorption, making essential oils an especially valuable treatment.

Essential oils have a direct effect on the parts of the brain that control anxiety, stress, depression, and fear. They have the power to impact our emotions and feelings of well-being.

In fact, exposure to specific essential oils can decrease the heart rate and blood pressure. This provides relaxation, relieves unwanted stress, and helps you to feel back in control.

Oils interact with the body through absorption on the skin, and/or through ones olfactory system. Once the essential oil is in the body, it gives signals to the limbic system of the brain.

But for today, were talking about how to specifically use oils for anxiety. Here are my favorite ways to use these oils, I would not recommend internal consumption for these unless they are the vitality line by Young Living.

  • Aromatically This may be the most well known way to use essential oils. Take a few drops from the bottle into the palm of your hands. Cup your hands around your mouth and nose and take deep breaths in of the oil.
  • Topically this is the most popular way to use it. Place on your head , behind ears, wrists or on the vita flex points. You can dilute the oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil to reduce the strength or smell of the oil if its too much.
  • Diffusing Blends Through a diffuser youre able to fill the air with the essence of that essential oil allowing it to get into your lungs and therefore your blood stream. Be sure to look at your diffuser to get the correct water to oil ratio. Usually it is 3-4 drops of essential oil for every 100 ml . However this can be changed based on how strong you want the scent or how big your diffuser is.
  • Frankincense Essential Oil Helps With Stress And Anxiety

Frankincense oil has a strong scent that is good for anxiety and can help you feel calmer.

Essential Oils To Treat Anxiety: What Research Says

Aromatherapists, and perhaps some enlightened health care or mental health professionals, regularly suggest essential oils as a natural remedy that can treat the effects of anxiety and stress.

But do essential oils really help? Evidence suggests that they do.

Many clinical trials and research studies have examined the efficacy of essential oils, and a number of them have focused on anxiety and/or depression. The bottom line: it appears that some aromatherapy agents like lavender essential oil work in a way thats similar to anxiolytic agents like Xanax and Valium. They target the chemical messengers in the brain that can elevate anxiety or stress levels.

In fact, one study found that essential oils were able to provide stress relief for pre-operative patients, and another reported the same positive results among women suffering from postpartum depression and anxiety. Still others discovered the benefits of essential oil therapy for the stress of childbirth and for those in hospice care. And the review of lavender essential oil research we mentioned earlier even showed that aromatherapy can help with such serious issues as panic attacks and phobias.

Work Essential Oils Into A Deep Breathing Routine

Essential Oils for Stress and Anxiety | Stress Relief

One of the simplest ways to tell your body that youre in control is by breathing deeply. Deep breathing calms the body, regulates the heart rate, and can help reduce cortisol levels.

When you regularly practice deep breathing, it becomes second nature, so I recommend scheduling breathing pauses throughout your day. Start by practicing the following deep breathing routine at the top of each hour, pairing it with the calming essential oil of your choice. Lavender is my favorite essential oil to pair with this ritual . I’ll take a whiff before getting started and let the effects of the inhaled oil circulate through my body as I go:

  • Get into a comfortable position and bring your attention to your breath.
  • Allow the rhythm of your breaths to complement a slow count of 10 in your head,
  • Counting to 5 in your head, allow a steady stream of air to flow in through your nostrils, billowing into the deep recesses of your lungs.
  • Pausing gently and hold your breath in for 5 seconds before gently leaking the air out for 5 seconds through your mouth.

    Essential Oils To Aid Sleep

Aromatherapy before bed may help you get a better nights sleep. Try diffusing essential oils into your bedroom before sleeping to help you relax and let go of the day.

Ylang ylang is thought to have strong calming effects and promote relaxation, making it effective for clearing the mind before sleep.

    Diffuse Your Own Stress

When we inhale essential oils, they travel through the olfactory system into our brains, where they can affect the body in a number of waysincluding potentially regulating the nervous system response and promoting calm. You can fill any room in your home with the scent of an oil using a diffuser. Here are two more of my favorite blends to diffuse when anxiety strikes. Note that a diffuser should be used intermittently, and only for a few hours a day.

    • 3 drops rosemary essential oil
    • 2 drops lavender essential oil
    • 2 drops wild orange essential oil
    • 1 drop peppermint or spearmint essential oil

    Side Effects And Precautions

Although there are many essential oils for anxiety, it is important to remember that all essential oils are liquids containing highly concentrated compounds.

Therefore, you should never apply essential oils undiluted to your skin to help relieve anxiety or treat other health conditions. Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil such as coconut oil, sweet almond oil, extra virgin olive oil, or jojoba oil.

Some essential oils can cause an adverse skin reaction. Calming essential oils from citrus fruits such as bergamot, lemon, and orange can also increase sun sensitivity.

If you are pregnant, you should speak with your doctor before using aromatherapy essential oils to promote sleep, reduce stress, calm nerves, or deal with the symptoms of anxiety.

Severe cases of depression or anxiety cannot be cured through the use of essential oils alone. However inhaling certain essential oils can help you reduce stress and relax body and mind.

Always contact your doctor before you decide to stop your medication and solely rely on aromatherapy to ease your symptoms and negative emotions. You can also refer to my previous article about stress and anxiety, as well as my article about depression for more natural options to treat these issues.
