Anxiety and stress are common and can be caused by many different things like a big life challenge, a buildup of smaller difficulties, or mental health conditions. It can be difficult to navigate all of the feelings associated with anxiety and stress, but one all-natural way to relieve symptoms may be to use herbs.
One way to consume or ingest anxiety-relieving herbs is through bitters.
Bitters are high-proof alcohol spirits infused with botanicals, like herbs, roots, fruit, flowers, spices, and bark. The calming ingredients can be an easy way to naturally destress. Bitters have been found to aid digestive health, curb sugar cravings, boost the immune system, and ease stress.
Bitters are usually made of three parts:
- a neutral spirit
- a bittering agent
- aromatics
While you may have heard of using bitters to create elaborate cocktails, they have also been used as a remedy for common ailments such as digestion irregularities since the 1700s.
Bitters have several health benefits, such as:
- digestion and gut health
Research suggests that several herbal supplements may be helpful in treating stress, anxiety, depression, and more. In fact, people have been using herbs for thousands of years to address numerous physical and mental health conditions.
Best Herb For Restoring Mental Focus
Rhodiola
Rhodiola has a history of use in supporting memory and mental focus, especially in northern locales, such as Siberia, where it grows wild. Its also used to treat immune depletion resulting from overwork, chemotherapy, radiation, and other stressors.
Mazzarella likes rhodiola for its fast-acting assistance with focus, especially for stressful tasks like studying for an exam or rushing to meet a deadline. Its ideal for a big push of cognitive labor, she says.
Despite rhodiolas obvious appeal for people working long hours, research is scarce. But a small 2008 clinical trial at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that people with generalized anxiety disorder who took 340 mg of rhodiola extract daily for 10 weeks felt significant improvements and experienced few side effects.
Rhodiola is good for supporting and restoring a strained-adrenal system, says Emmons, especially if chronic stress has left you with brain fog.
How to Use: Rhodiola can be mildly stimulating, so its best taken in the morning or early afternoon. Tinctures and capsules are both effective.
What Is The Difference Between Herbal Remedies And Supplements
Herbal remedies and supplements are two different things. Herbal remedies can be made up of a number of ingredients that work synergistically to provide relief from symptoms.
Herbal remedies come from plants and are not regulated the same way as supplements, meaning they can contain more active ingredients. They also have less side effects.
Herbal Supplements for Anxiety on the other hand can often contain additional ingredients such as fillers and binders that are not necessarily recommended for use in general, and can sometimes carry unknown side effects. Supplements usually include just the active ingredient of a plant or herb along with a main filler ingredient such as Magnesium Stearate, Potassium Sorbate, Titanium Dioxide, Artificial Colors and Flavors and do not take into consideration the synergistic properties associated with using the whole plant.
It is also worth noting that Herbal remedies are not regulated like supplements. In addition, some herbal teas and made-to-order cosmetics may contain heavy metals, or other unsafe ingredients so it is imperitive to purchase from an established and trusted source.
Herbal remedies are supplements that have their own proprietary blend of ingredients. These herbs or plants can be used to heal wounds, reduce inflammation, fight infections, or help with a wide variety of ailments. The human body relies on certain plants for its natural defenses and protection from infections. We will discuss some these herbs shortly.

How Does Stress Work
The body has a normal and natural stress response, which stems from the sympathetic nervous systemalso commonly referred to as fight-or-flight response. This stress response is literally a survival instinct, honed by hundreds of thousands of years of humans living a nomadic life with frequent overt dangers.
When the fight-or-flight response is initiated, a cocktail of stress hormonesincluding epinephrine pours into the bloodstream. Our physiology adapts to support either fleeing the scene or getting ready to fight whatever the threat coming at us may be. Of course, there are still some situations where this adaptive response to an acute threat is useful in modern life: natural disasters, emergency situations, or times when your life is in danger. But for our purposes here, we are more concerned with ongoing events that cause and contribute to stress.
Stress that is ongoing is referred to as chronic stress. It turns out that the pressures of daily life in combination with adverse childhood experiences, racism, isolation, and other modern ailments keep many of us in a heightened state of cyclical chronic stress. This means our sympathetic nervous systems may be continually activated.

While this may not encompass the full scope of something as complex as the human mind, there appear to be two primary factors that cause stress in most cases. These are:
These topics go deep, so we will offer a brief overview of each.
Your body depends on countless chemical reactions that occur from moment to moment. Some of the major chemicals that influence your body’s function are hormones. Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers. They travel to tissues and organs in your bloodstream, telling them what to do and when to do it.
These hormones require a delicate balance that can easily get disrupted. A hormonal imbalance occurs when you have too much or too little of a specific hormone in the bloodstream. As the body is so dependent on hormones for instruction, even small changes in hormones can profoundly affect your entire body.
To stop this vicious cycle, you need to focus on restoring chemical or hormonal imbalances. An effective solution is to supplement high-quality amino acids, as they play a crucial role in hormone production.
