What Oils Help With Stress

Primary Ways Malabsorption Occurs

Which Essential Oil to Use for Stress

Maintaining health by providing the body with all that it needs is a delicate dance. As you can probably imagine, malabsorption adds another level of complication to an already intricate choreography that eventually ends in some form of malnutrition. More often than not, disease conditions occur due to malabsorption of nutrients over decades.

In a nutshell, malabsorption is a situation where, for whatever reason, the body cannot break down and absorb certain proteins, fats, vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and enzymes in foods that a person may be taking.

So, what causes malabsorption in the first place? The following are just a few possible reasons.

#1. Gut Imbalance

Ultimately all other malabsorption triggers come down to what happens in the gut. This is because the digestive tract is the first stop for a nutrient breakdown.

According to the Merck Manual , digestion and absorption occur in three phases. First, bile salts help food break down in the intestinal tract. Secondly, certain enzymes begin to digest , microscopic food particles even further into substances cells can absorb for nutrition. Lastly, the lymph fluid transports these nutrients where they need to go.

When phase one of this process goes awry, this is sometimes called maldigestion. When any part of the second or third phase of this process is hindered, this is technically called malabsorption.

  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • small intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome

#2. Methylation Issues

Side Effects And Precautions

Although there are many essential oils for anxiety, it is important to remember that all essential oils are liquids containing highly concentrated compounds.

Therefore, you should never apply essential oils undiluted to your skin to help relieve anxiety or treat other health conditions. Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil such as coconut oil, sweet almond oil, extra virgin olive oil, or jojoba oil.

Some essential oils can cause an adverse skin reaction. Calming essential oils from citrus fruits such as bergamot, lemon, and orange can also increase sun sensitivity.

If you are pregnant, you should speak with your doctor before using aromatherapy essential oils to promote sleep, reduce stress, calm nerves, or deal with the symptoms of anxiety.

Severe cases of depression or anxiety cannot be cured through the use of essential oils alone. However inhaling certain essential oils can help you reduce stress and relax body and mind.

Always contact your doctor before you decide to stop your medication and solely rely on aromatherapy to ease your symptoms and negative emotions. You can also refer to my previous article about stress and anxiety, as well as my article about depression for more natural options to treat these issues.

I did manage however to find some scientific explanations to this, which, lets face it will be as interesting to read as the fine print on your insurance forms so I will keep it brief and in laymans terms. But if you did want to read the article, go for it by all means here. For the rest of us, basically how it works is that when we inhale a scent that we find appealing, it releases chemicals/transmitters in our brains that make us happy. These positive responses then directly affect other areas of our bodies including heart rate, breathing and muscle release. Over time, our brains remember these feelings and relate them to certain oils/aromas. Added to this is the fact that some of the plants used in essential oils such as lavender have compounds proven to calm and relax the body.

Again, and I cannot highlight this enough, we are talking about relieving the symptoms here, NOT the causes.

Essential Oils As Tools To Relieve Stress

My Favourite Essential Oils for Stress Relief

Armed with this knowledge that I could use essential oils to help balance my stress, and not need to abandon my job or my children, I incorporated several emotional blends , along with:

Parasympathetic: The first line of defense against stress is known as the fight or flight response triggered by the sympathetic nervous system. We are designed to switch into this sympathetic state, flee from danger, then drop back into the balanced parasympathetic rest and digest state where we can rest, repair and heal. To help stimulate the Parasympathetic response, apply Vibrant Blue OilsParasympatheticblend to the vagal nerve . For more aggressive vagal stimulation, you can also apply at the base of the skull . Apply before meals to optimize digestion and up to 6 times daily to help reset the body into the Parasympathetic state.

Adrenal: The adrenal glands help determine and regulate the bodys stress response by secreting hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Prolonged periods of stress can deplete our reserves of these hormones and exhaust the adrenal glands. Applying Vibrant Blue Oils Adrenal blend over the adrenal glands , may help to increase the bodys ability to adapt to stress and maintain healthy adrenal function.

Lavender Essential Oil Helps Relieve Anxiety Disorders

How to Use Essential Oils to Relieve Anxiety

Essential oil from lavender is one of the best essential oils for lowering anxiety levels and relieving stress.

The journal Mental Health Clinician reported that lavender essential oil has many anxiolytic benefits. Compounds in lavender oil such as linalool and linalyl acetate inhibit neuroreceptors that are associated with anxiety. Inhaling lavender oil aromas has a calming effect without acting as a sedative.

A review of its calming properties found that lavender oil is a relaxing essential oil that helps protect the nervous system. Inhaling lavender scent is good for anxiety as it helps to reduce agitation, treat social anxiety disorders, and has an anti-depressant effect.

Lavender essential oil is also good for helping treat insomnia and improve sleep patterns. In fact, one study showed that lavender oil aromatherapy could be as effective as benzodiazepines in helping improve sleep quality.

One clinical trial involving 140 women found that lavender aromatherapy can help to treat postnatal depression and reduce stress and anxiety.

Lavender oil is also one of the best essential oils to help cope with panic attacks and anxiety disorders.

  • Skin healing and regeneration. Geranium rose oil is considered a natural antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant. Use it in skin tonics, lotions, moisturizers, and balms to aid with conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, oily skin, and acne. It also helps fade scars.
  • How To Use Essential Oils

Essential oils are very pure, concentrated oils. Many of these oils are toxic, so a person should not ingest them.

Most manufacturers will recommend diluting essential oils with a carrier oil, such as olive oil or sweet almond oil. Always read the label before using and carefully follow the directions for diluting the oil.

A person may also wish to consider doing a patch test before applying essential oils to their skin or fabrics. Some may stain or cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction.

There are several different ways that a person can use diluted essential oils, such as by:

    • using the oils in special diffusers
    • applying the oils to fabrics and soft furnishings, such as bedding, pillows, or cushions
    • massaging the oils into the skin
    • mixing oils in with bath salts or lotions

Smelling certain essential oils could have an immediate calming effect on the brain. This is because the scent molecules from the oil travel through the olfactory nerves and to the amygdala, the part of the brain involved with experiencing emotions.

For example, a 2010 study in mice found that inhaling linalool, a common component of many essential oils, can bring on anti-anxiety effects.

The herbs in each herbal bath salt provide a natural and beautiful way to add some healing properties to the mix. The essential oils kick it up a notch by giving you a little more magical properties.

I used 3 different essential oils in this mixture Cardamom, Lavender, and Rosemary. Lets start with Cardamom. The benefits go way beyond the wonderful smell it provides. Cardamom has anti-bacterial, anti-infection, anti-inflammatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. In essential oil form, you will get all of these benefits in a very small amount!

The lavender simply enhances the herbal properties of the lavender in herbal form. The essential oil is much more powerful so you get all of the healing properties amplified with the essential oil.

Last but not least, I added a few drops of Rosemary essential oil. The Rosemary essential oil adds some immune-boosting and detoxifying magic to the mix. If you are feeling a little under the weather, Id recommend using a bath salt in your bath to feel a little bit better. Not only do you feel less stress which helps the immune system, but the Rosemary also adds some herbal properties which kick it up a notch!

    Safety Concerns And Other Precautions

Due to its growth in popularity, aromatherapy oils are more easily available than ever. Many specialty shops, health food stores, and large chain grocery stores carry a wide variety of essential oils. However, there are some potential issues with having essential oils so readily available.

First, there is insufficient research and little scientific proof demonstrating the effectiveness of aromatherapy.

Using aromatherapy oils to treat medical or mental health conditions has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration . Essential oils are also not standardized by the FDA, causing the potential for diluted oils to be sold through retailers.

Second, it is possible to have an adverse reaction to essential oils. These strong scents may cause headaches, dizziness, and nausea. It is also possible to have an allergic reaction, which can lead to difficulty in breathing and skin irritation. Essential oils should not be ingested, as they have the potential for toxicity.

Last, even though essential oils are easy to find, they should not be used without the guidance of a certified aromatherapist and clearance from your doctor. When discussing this option with your doctor, make certain that he or she is aware of any prescription and over-the-counter drugs you are taking. Additionally, some aromatherapy oils may not be recommended to those with certain medical conditions or for those who are pregnant or nursing.
