Why Does Stress Trigger Acne Breakouts
Our bodys response to stress is an evolutionary imperative that exists to keep us safe from environmental and internal dangers to our health. Unfortunately, when stress is long term and unabated, it can lead to some serious health concerns, including elevated blood pressure, weakened immune system, and yes, acne breakouts and other skin issues. Stress impacts the body because it activates responses from the endocrine and immune systems. This additional pressure on the body from a heightened stress response means that the body is overtaxed and needs to reroute some nutrients and resources from the skin, hair, and nails. Even though the skin is the bodys largest organ, when stress is draining your energy, the body will send its resources to more essential areas of organ function and immune response. That means, your skin cells arent turning over as quickly, breakouts or skin flareups arent clearing up as rapidly, and you generally just dont look or feel your best.
When you think of how your body responds to stress, its no surprise that many chronic and systemic illnesses have early warning signs that manifest in the skin. When the body needs vital vitamins and nutrients for more pressing health issues, your skins health needs take a backburner. Similarly, during times of stress, acne breakouts can be more severe and take longer to heal.
How Do You Treat Stress Acneand Can You Prevent It
Recognizing that the acne might be stress-related is probably the most importantand hardeststep in managing stress acne, Dr. Truong says. The first step to getting rid of the acne, of course, is to try to destress. Dr. Truong suggests trying stress-relieving techniques, such as meditating, journaling, or doing yoga. With the absence of the stress, the acne will eventually go away on its own. “It may take a few days, weeks, months. Usually, I tell people however long it took to get there is however long it will resolve on its own,” Dr. Truong says.
Different products can help clear up stress acne, too. First, Dr. Truong recommends to always start with a gentle cleanser like a Cetaphil foaming cleanser , morning and night. Aside from that, though, treatment varies person-to-person. For instance, for someone with mild acne who is already using a gentle cleanser and wants something a little stronger, a cleanser that includes benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or glycolic acid, such as Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Cleanser or CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser , may help, she says.
Or, if a patient with mild acne is already using a topical, gentle cleanser in combination with a topical antibiotic regimen, such as topical azelaic acid, dapsone, or clindamycin, Dr. Truong might then consider adding on a low topical retinoid, such as an over-the-counter adapalene gel, like Differin , or a prescription tretinoin cream.

Risks And Side Effects
While you can begin by tackling hormonal acne on your own at home, you may want to visit a dermatologist if your condition is reoccurring or worsening. Your doctor/dermatologist can help pinpoint any underlying conditions that might be contributing to our breakouts, such as PCOS, high testosterone or cortisol levels, a thyroid condition, or another hormone issue.
If the treatments above dont seem to be doing enough to reduce your breakouts, speak with your dermatologist about other options such as antiandrogen drugs, which block androgen receptors to decrease the actions and effects of testosterone, or stronger topical prescriptions to fight acne-causing bacteria.

The Western diet, which is generally rich in refined sugars and other processed foods has been linked to increased inflammation and to acne.
Foods with refined sugars are high on the glycemic index in others words, they trigger your bodys insulin level to quickly rise. A high insulin level puts your immune system on alert, triggering the inflammation response.
A diet rich in complex carbohydrates and omega-3 fatty acids can help you avoid this pitfall and improve your overall health. Avoid refined sugars and stay away from junk food. Stress Hormones And Your Skin
Acne-prone skin is the result of a combination of factors that lead to blocked pores, some of which are influenced by hormonescortisol and androgens, for examplethat are secreted by the endocrine system in response to stress.
These hormones escalate the production of sebum, a protective, oily substance naturally produced by glands near skin hair follicles inside of the pilosebaceous unit as part of the skin’s immune system. High population levels of Propionibacteriumacnes, a bacterium living in human skin that feeds of sebum, puts stress on the pilosebaceous duct and catalyzes an immune system response.
White blood cells attracted to this bacterium secrete an enzyme that may damage the wall of the hair follicle, releasing its contents into the hair shaft, leading to an inflammatory reaction.
Each of these factors individually and together contribute to the ecosystem that gives rise to and perpetuates acne.
Interestingly, there is some research suggesting that individual differences in the bacterial populations of the gut microbiome, which are impacted by stress and which play a modulatory role on systemic immunity, may also affect acne.

How Can You Keep Oily Skin Under Control
Since high cortisol levels kick start the skin’s oil glands, you might find your face is oilier than usual. If you find yourself looking super shiny, Dr. Shamban suggests using exfoliating pads once a day like the ones from her product line AVA MD. “Swipe the pad over a clean face starting once a week and move up to two or three times at night before bed,” she says. “They’re made with pure 5% glycolic acid and 2% salicylic acid. These are the best basic ingredients for acne prone skin and they help banish blemishes with regular usage.”
For a quick fix, both dermatologists are fans of oil-blotting papers because no matter how many times you gently dab one of these sheets on your face, they’re not going to make breakouts any worse.
Causes & Prevention Of Stress Acne
First things first: What causes stress acne? Stress, of course, but it’s a little bit deeper than that. According to a 2017 research review in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology titled “Emerging Issues in Adult Female Acne,” a self-administered, dermatologist-validated questionnaire of 3,305 women ages 25 to 40 years in France revealed adult-onset acne was reported by 41 percent of the women, and that “stress was listed as a precipitating factor for acne in half of the women surveyed.”
So, how does stress actually relate to the cause of blemishes on your face? Thats where things get a little more complicated. “Emotional stress triggers an increased release of the stress hormone cortisol,” Vaidian explains. According to the Mayo Clinic, when increased, cortisol triggers a systemic response within the body that has the potential to “alter immune system responses and the digestive system, the reproductive system, and growth processes.”
Cortisol is key in causing stress acne breakouts as well. “When cortisol levels rise, they disrupt levels of hormones that regulate sebum balance and result in clogged pores and development of acne, Vaidian explains. In other words: More oil production means more clogged pores, and more clogged pores mean more breakouts.

How To Prevent Stress Acne
“First and foremost, get plenty of sleep. When sleep deprived, the body makes more of the stress hormone, cortisol,” says Dr. Shamban. “Increased cortisol causes inflammation and stress on the body and can worsen skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis, as well as cause an increased breakdown of collagen and hyaluronic acid .”
As for when you’re awake and not drinking water? Run, do yoga, read, mediditate. Partake in any solo activity that helps take your mind off of the news.
Keeping A Routine Doesn’t Have To Be Difficult
In fact, The Art of Simple suggests that we follow routines more than we follow the exact time of day. Our bodies become used to a routine and offers important signals that our bodies pick up on subconsciously.

Can I Prevent Acne
There’s no sure way to prevent acne. But these tips might help reduce the number and severity of your breakouts:
- Washing your skin is the most important thing you can do. It helps remove excess surface oils and dead skin cells that can clog your pores. But washing too much can cause damage by making your skin too dry or irritating acne thats already there.
- Remember to wash after exercising because sweat can clog your pores and make your acne worse. If you work around greasy food or oil, if you’ve been sweating from heat or from working hard, wash your face and other acne-prone areas as soon as possible.
- If you use skin products, such as lotions or makeup, look for ones that are non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic, which means that they don’t clog pores.
- If you use hair spray or styling gel, try to keep them away from your face as much as possible. Many hair products contain oils that can make acne worse. Try to use water-based products.
- If you get acne on areas such as your chest or back, avoid wearing tight clothes, which can rub and cause irritation.
Take A Fish Oil Supplement
Omega-3 fatty acids are healthy fats that offer a multitude of health benefits.
You must get these fats from your diet, but research shows that most people who eat a standard Western diet dont get enough of them .
Fish oils contain two main types of omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid .
High levels of EPA and DHA have been shown to decrease inflammatory factors, which may reduce the risk of acne .
In one study, 45 individuals with acne were given omega-3 fatty acid supplements containing both EPA and DHA daily. After 10 weeks, their acne decreased significantly .
Theres no specific recommended daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids. The 20152020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that healthy adults consume around 250 mg of combined EPA and DHA each day .
You can also get omega-3 fatty acids by eating salmon, sardines, anchovies, walnuts, chia seeds, and ground flax seeds.
Fish oils contain two main types of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Taking a fish oil supplement may help decrease acne.
While these results indicate that exfoliation may improve skin health and appearance, more research is needed on acne.
There are a wide variety of exfoliation products available, but you can also make a scrub at home using sugar or salt.
If you choose to try mechanical exfoliation, be sure to gently rub your skin to avoid damaging it.

Why Do Feelings Of Stress Show Up On Our Skin
“First of all, stress never makes anything better, and lots of skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, and acne can flare with stress,” explains Shari Marchbein, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. “Pimples, whether large cystic lesion or small comedones, are caused by a combination of four things.”
Those four things include bacteria , general inflammation, plugged-up pores, and hormones which is the key factor associated with stress-induced acne. Specifically, a hormone called cortisol, “which increases in the blood at times of stress or with lack of sleep,” is responsible for triggering breakouts, Marchbein explains.
The level of stress that prompts a flare-up can vary from person to person, and you may notice your skin changing just a few hours after a stressful event, says Laurel Naversen Geraghty, a board-certified dermatologist in Medford, Oregon. Even before your mind registers anxiety, those feelings may manifest on your skin.
“Your body reacts to stress by elevating certain hormones, such as cortisol, to put it in a state of ‘fight or flight,'” explains , a board-certified dermatologist in Coral Gables, Florida. “The oil glands in the skin actually have receptors for this hormone, so an increase in stress will increase the formation of oil in the skin.”
