What To Do When Feeling Stressed

Switch Up Your Routine

Overwhelmed? Do this! An Antidote to Feeling Overwhelmed

Sometimes, staying in one routine too long can actually cause stress rather than take it away.

Having a routine is important for many people to avoid stress, but what happens when you do the same thing day after day, eating the same dinner, waking up at the same time, taking the same train into the same job?

If possible, switch up your routine a bit.

Get up earlier to go for a walk before you go to work, bring something new for lunch every day, and pick up a new hobby that you enjoy to do in the evenings.

They say that one of the reason time feels slower for children is because theyre constantly learning and experiencing new things.

Go back to that childlike state of mixing it up and learning new things, and you may find that your life feels longer in a positive way.

Tip : Connect To Others

There is nothing more calming than spending quality time with another human being who makes you feel safe and understood. In fact, face-to-face interaction triggers a cascade of hormones that counteracts the bodys defensive fight-or-flight response. Its natures natural stress reliever . So make it a point to connect regularlyand in personwith family and friends.

Keep in mind that the people you talk to dont have to be able to fix your stress. They simply need to be good listeners. And try not to let worries about looking weak or being a burden keep you from opening up. The people who care about you will be flattered by your trust. It will only strengthen your bond.

Of course, its not always realistic to have a pal close by to lean on when you feel overwhelmed by stress, but by building and maintaining a network of close friends you can improve your resiliency to lifes stressors.

What To Do If Youre Feeling Stressed Tired And Uninspired

I must admit, I have a good life. And I still get stressed.

I have a truly loving partner in life. We live well. We are all healthy. We are not at a loss for anything in our life. Yet even with all that, there are still times when I feel stressed, tired or uninspired. Maybe its because I dont have enough time in my day to focus on my to-do list, or that my body is aching, or that I am worried a project wont be successful enough. Just like everyone else, I can feel stressed too.

I recently came back from a retreat, where I set an intention to take time and be more present with my girls, and to have more fun. Summer is here and my kids are out of school, and for the last week or so I have been feeling dread wondering how I would be able to entertain them during this week before camp starts. How would I fit in my work and still have them enjoy this week with me?

I noticed that I was seeing this opportunity to kick off summer playfully as an obligation, instead of an opportunity. So Ive made it my work this week is to notice how simply changing my mindset and reframing my inner conversations from looking at things as an obligation to an opportunity .

How can you fill yourself with more energy to enjoy life? Well if you really want to dive deep into this conversation join me July 20-22 to get the full set of tools. But here is how you can get started by reframing your obligations.

Stop Your Stress Triggers

The occasional stressful event happens to everyone. But when we keep getting stressed by the same things all the time, its a clue that those situations are our stress triggers. Over time, these triggers become a drag on our emotional wellbeing, even when life feels relatively calm.

At the root of every emotion is a thought, says Shatté. The key is to pinpoint that thought before it spirals into a full-fledged emotional response. So, the next time you face one of your top stress triggers, tune in to what youre thinking. Then, challenge your inner voice: What evidence is there to prove that the thought is true?

What to do about it: When your experiencing stress, pause and take a moment to breathe before speaking to someone. This can prevent you from saying something you dont mean.
