In economics , financial stress is defined as being unable to manage assets. By wealth is meant all income and other possessions of material value. It describes increasing the asset by managing it correctly, or at least maintaining its value. When we descend from the level of large economies to the level of the individual, we can redefine financial stress as follows: The deterioration of the balance between incomes and expenditures negatively. This definition makes it inevitable to talk about expenses outweighing revenues with assets. Being able to manage expenses is a condition of being able to manage the material values one has. The reverse is also true.
People perceive the inability of their income to meet their expenses as a threat and they get stressed out of fear of suffering a loss of life. The brain, as in all moments of threat and danger, gives the body a fight or flight command. However, financial danger is different from physical threats and dangers that the body recognizes and is naturally prepared for.

Is there such a thing as stress overload? And what are some of the signs that we are approaching the breaking point? Finding an answer to those questions is harder than you might think.

Yeager has tons of suggestions, but it starts with physical activity. Start your day by taking a walk, at home or on a treadmill at the gym, he says. A minimum of 30 minutes per day can protect you from the release and build-up of cortisol in the system. Or you can pick any aerobic activity, like swimming, jogging, biking, or anything that gets your blood pumping. This creates an environment that functions as a release for the bodys fight response.
You can also counter the mayhem with any type of meditation. Taking 10 to 15 minutes per day to clear your mind can help you to calm your central nervous system, Yeager says. This is especially true before bed, where taking 10 minutes to sit in a darkened room with no distractions, clearing your head and slowing your respirations to the lowest comfortable levels, will help you to fall asleep.
Beyond that, just remember to seek out enjoyable activities that engage your positive emotional spectrum. Neuroscience has shown that finding ways to emotewhether its music, painting or poetryis a way to release your emotions that triggers a cascade of positive neurotransmitters. To remain healthy, you can never be too busy for those mood-boosting experiences.

What is stress? My expert friends say it is our bodys wayof responding to threat or a demand- whether it is real or imagined. They got me at Real or Imagined! So what they are saying is, an escalation email from client is no different from standing in front of a bear. The body does its thing and dumps stress hormones into the blood.
I will have to agree that I could use it once in a while to spring myself into action to meet the challenges. But how much stress is too much ?
To help get to the answer, I did a little analysis of my recent work related Stress attack. Yes I used a Hurricane scale 🙂

Productivity : Healthy amount of stress that helps me focus and spring to action to address challenges
How I feel: Focused and pumped
Work hours 8 hours with my usual breaks

Productivity: Still productive but shifts in the priorities for the day creating a pile of work for next day
How I feel: A little worried but still feel I am in control.
Work hours 8 hours No breaks except lunch break

Productivity: My Productivity declines and the work piles on.
How I feel: I am irritable and my people skills are impacted. Work seeps into personal time and schedule/Wine bottle opened

The Great Malaise Ages 8 And Up

A young woman narrates a description of herself as attractive, accomplished, passionate and at the beginning of the film, the animated images match her description. As the film continues, she says, I feel like Im where I belong, but the images show the opposite for example, a porcupine surrounded by balloons or a fish in a birdcage. She can no longer maintain the facade of having everything under control. The images change to include strategies to cope with stress, such as yoga or reading on a hammock at the beach. However, we get a sense that burnout has had a long-lasting impact on her well-being.
Students will be captivated by the images in the film, including a performing seal, a blooming rose that withers and a cruise ship thats aimed at an iceberg.
Ideally, a teacher would use The Great Malaise and Overdose together to demonstrate the impact of stress on our lives. They are fantastic short films that will generate a rich discussion and could be used to create a response to the work through writing, drawing and other mediums of expression.
