I recently heard someone say that we think of traumatic stress as producing post-traumatic stress disorder , but most of the time it actually produces increased resilience. And the research agrees. PTSD is a response to trauma, but its not the most common response.
Most of the time, extreme stress pushes us to grow. But it is, more often than not, a path to resilience.
Take a moment to reflect on any growth youve seen in yourself this year. What are you better at? What have you let go of? What have you embraced?

What Are The Symptoms Of Stress
Stress can affect all aspects of your life, including your emotions, behaviors, thinking ability, and physical health. No part of the body is immune. But, because people handle stress differently, symptoms of stress can vary. Symptoms can be vague and may be the same as those caused by medical conditions. So it is important to discuss them with your doctor. You may experience any of the following symptoms of stress.
Emotional symptoms of stress include:
- Becoming easily agitated, frustrated, and moody
- Feeling overwhelmed, like you are losing control or need to take control
- Having difficulty relaxing and quieting your mind
- Feeling bad about yourself , lonely, worthless, and depressed
- Avoiding others
Physical symptoms of stress include:
- Low energy

How To Talk Your Brain Out Of The Stress Loop
So how to deal with this “I’m stressed but not stressed” nightmare? One practice Dr. Austern recommends is whats called de-catastrophizing.Our brains have been trained and evolved to think negatively, so in these moments when the risk of something is really not catastrophic, its good to remind ourselves that Hey, the odds of this happening are probably much lower than I think, he says. For example, when your car is stalled, and its already 9:15 a.m. , its easy to spiral out of control. But taking a step back to really think through possible outcomes can help you put things in perspective, Dr. Austern says. Sure, your boss might be a little annoyed that youre late to a meetingshe might even say something to you about itbut is it *that* likely that shell fire you for being late to work once? Probably not.
Another stress-busting trick: deep breathing exercises, which signal to your body that its okay to relax,” says Hale-Rose. Try inhaling for a count of three and exhaling for a count of six.
Lastly, Hale-Rose recommends starting a gratitude practice of some kind which research suggests can reduce anxiety and boost happiness. Any time we are being active in our own care we feel more empowered, which can increase optimism and happiness, she says. That in turn helps us be more resilient in the face of stress. Even the sneaky kind that doesn’t seem to have a clear cause.

What Is Acute Stress Disorder

Lets Talk About Stress
For one, stress is typically defined as a response to an external trigger, and can either be acute or chronic . In an ideal world, the duration of the stress response corresponds with its trigger: Once a stressor has been dealt with, the body can return to its natural baseline state.
Acute stress. Remember the pit in your stomach from before? Thats an example of the stress response, which you might know better as fight-or-flight. When youre triggered by something stressful, your brain floods your body with hormones that push you to react: Blood moves away from digestive organs and into your limbs, allowing you to move more efficiently and quickly. Your heart beats faster and breathing speeds up, bringing more oxygen into the bloodstream.
Stress evolved as a survival mechanism, designed to make it easier for us to fight or flee from life-threatening triggers. Today, even though unreasonable emails do not warrant the same urgency as a hungry tiger on the savannah, our bodies dont know the difference. While stress might not feel great in the moment, it can still be helpful by motivating us to stay alert and take action when we need to.
In fact, the Yerkes-Dodson law in psychology proposes that moderate levels of stress are optimal for peak performance. We tend to talk about this state as being in the zone or in flow. Too little stress leads to low level performance, whereas too much is a recipe for needless fight-or-flight.
