Losing a job is one of lifes most stressful experiences. Its normal to feel angry, hurt, or depressed, grieve for all that youve lost, or feel anxious about what the future holds. Job loss and unemployment involves a lot of change all at once, which can rock your sense of purpose and self-esteem. While the stress can seem overwhelming, there are many steps you can take to come out of this difficult period stronger, more resilient, and with a renewed sense of purpose.

Don’t Suffer In Silence

Get support, whether from family, friends, your academic advisor, campus counseling center, or a trusted online community. A heart-to-heart talk with someone you trust can help you get rid of toxic feelings and may even give you a fresh perspective.

If these steps don’t bring relief, or if you are still unable to cope and feel as if the stress is affecting how you function every day, it could be something more acute and chronic–like depression. Don’t let it go unchecked!

You Are Not Organized

It isnt very hard to overload our brains these days. The mental load of balancing work and home life can be exhausting. When we are not prepared, we waste valuable space in our minds that can be used for rational thinking, problem-solving, and by default, not stressing over small things.

A lack of organization also keeps us always in busy mode. We discussed the effects of busyness on stress levels, and being unorganized only adds to how busy we feel.

When we are continually looking for essential documents or trying to ensure we dont forget our impossibly long to-do lists, not only are we keeping ourselves busy, but we are forcing ourselves to multitask.

Writing things down, planning your day, and even organizing your time will not only make you more productive, but it will lessen the number of things you have to stress about and leave you with more time for yourself.

I have found that its often important to figure out what is causing my stress in the first place.

Of course, sometimes stress is caused by serious issues associated with trauma, depression, etc. but often it has a lot to do with something in our work life that can be quite easily changed.

Take a look:

1. We get too much information and phone time

Research is now showing that smartphones might be having a bigger effect on our brain than first thought.

I deleted Facebook from my phone because I found myself constantly needing to check it, just because I was bored. It as almost like an addiction and, if I didnt get my fix, I started to feel stressed.

Studies are also telling us that our brain is not designed to take in as much information as we get from our computers and phones every day. It seems to be having a really negative effect on a lot of people.

I highly recommend that everyone reads this wonderful speech given to the graduates of West Point Military Academy a few years ago by William Deresiewicz. It is called Solitude and Leadership and talks about how we all need to stop marinating in the opinions of other on social media and learn to think for ourselves and take control of our own lives.

2. We are lazy with records and taxes

Lets not underestimate how stressful it can be knowing that your taxes and financial records arent in order.

3. We dont exercise and so are overweight and under-socialized

4. We dont read, meditate or train our mind-vice enough

What Is Stress For


Stress, meaning increased tension, leads to an excess of energy. Our body registers that we need to do something and ramps up all of our systems. Stress is there to make sure we can adapt to our circumstances. But the catch is that constant stress eventually exhausts our resources. If we dont take time to recover, we can become physically or mentally unwell.

There are phases in life when there isnt an obvious reason for stress, like too high a workload. Sometimes the reasons for stress are diffuse and we may not even be aware of what they are. In light of the current situation, this is often the case, and absolutely understandable.

    Just as you can watch a train go past, you can observe a thought. By doing this, you undo the connection to that thought which would normally trigger stress. If you are able to observe something, you are detached from it.

    3. Let your thoughts come and go

    Thoughts have an enormous power of attraction. But be aware that you are in no way obliged to follow them, develop them or even to act in accordance with them. Thoughts are just thoughts. You cant magic them away, but you can simply let them be there without letting them influence you.

    4. What is behind my thoughts?

    If you no longer identify with your thoughts, you will notice that you have a consciousness behind them that is always free of stress. Practice the steps above regularly to access this inner calm more easily. Its available to you at any time.
