When high school junior Nora Huynh got her report card, she was devastated to see that she didn’t get a perfect 4.0.
Nora “had a total meltdown, cried for hours,” her mother, Jennie Huynh of Alameda, Calif., says. “I couldn’t believe her reaction.”
Nora is doing college-level work, her mother says, but many of her friends are taking enough advanced classes to boost their grade-point averages above 4.0. “It breaks my heart to see her upset when she’s doing so awesome and going above and beyond.”
And the pressure is taking a physical toll, too. At age 16, Nora is tired, is increasingly irritated with her siblings and often suffers headaches, her mother says.

How Caffeine Affects Your Stress Levels
Why does coffee make you stressed? Basically, it goes straight to the adenosine receptors in your brain, heart, and elsewhere, making you more awake and vigilant. It also activates the pituitary gland, encouraging it to release adrenaline â the hormone that causes you to go into âfight or flightâ mode. A study in Frontiers in Psychiatry in 2017 found that some peopleâs caffeine receptors are super sensitive, meaning they get those stress effects after drinking less matcha. Even if you donât carry that gene, the study noted that as little as 200mg of caffeine a day can cause anxiety. That said, a lot of studies about coffee and stress center on people who already have anxiety disorders, which might skew how people without anxiety can relate to the results.

More Than Half Of Students Surveyed Said They Need Mental Health Services Since Schools Closed
School closures were intended to keep students safe during the pandemic, but for many, its ushered in a different set of dangers: anxiety, depression and other serious mental health conditions.
School counselors, psychologists and social workers have been trying to help students virtually since campuses closed, listening to their struggles and offering advice on how to navigate the complex difficulties theyre facing. But what students need most right now in-person support is impossible to deliver, they said.
Ive been at this a long time, and Im scratching my head at how daunting this is, said Loretta Whitson, executive director of the California Association of School Counselors. In the Great Recession we were dealing with job loss, but now were facing job loss as well as widespread trauma.
Increasing numbers of students say they feel overwhelmed, and not just about the health of their family and friends due to the coronavirus. Their parents might be newly unemployed, they might be falling behind academically, they cant see their friends, or they might be trapped at home in an abusive family situation.
The result is this website, published in conjunction with the Wisconsin School Counselor Association, which includes guidelines for how counselors should handle subjects like grief, anxiety and suicide prevention while campuses are closed.

It can be easy to think that stress is caused by a failing on your part, or that its just a natural part of the job. For example, it youve got too much to do, its tempting to think this is because youre too slow or arent working hard enough. This can encourage us to work unrealistically long hours, which can worsen stress by making work the centre of our lives and reducing then time we have to unwind.
Feelings of stress are your bodys way of telling you something needs to change. Things arent going to get better by ignoring your body. If you dont talk to your boss, they wont know youre feeling overworked, which means they cant help you. There will almost certainly be a simple solution such as reassuring you that youre working at an acceptable pace, offering you training, or sharing work out more evenly.
