Traumatic experiences will interact with your personal vulnerabilities and previous difficult experiences.
This means you will have your own unique time line for getting over shock. If, for example, you already lost your job this year and now have had an accident that left you injured, you might take more time to feel better than someone who just had an injury.
So some people recover from emotional shock in several hours. Others in several days, some in several weeks. And for some, depending on what they go through, shock can even go on for six weeks or more.
Note that it is also possible to experience delayed emotional shock. So you might think an event has not upset you, only to feel symptoms days or weeks later.
Normal Things That Other People Breeze Through
I can function quite well in public situations but find myself completely exhausted afterwards. For example, yesterday I had lunch with some friends and then facilitated a book group discussion, after which I came home and collapsed into bed. I struggled to make banal small talk with groups of people, much preferring a deeper discussion with one or two others. I can stand up and give a talk and lead a class discussion, no problem, but then I have to retreat and rest for a whole day.

You may behave differently if youre stressed. You may:

here was a point in my life when stress almost killed me, literally. This happened during what would have appeared to be a very successful period in my life. But it was also a very stressful time at work, and the way I handled that stress severely impacted my health leading to an emergency wherein I lost 40 percent of my blood in 30 minutes and was just minutes from dying.
Since that episode, I have systematically gone about reframing my work not doing different work but approaching work differently specifically to remove stress. And the result is that Im actually much more effective at my job.
Heres how I got to that point: I was a 29-year-old up-and-coming leader in a fortune 500 company. I was running a couple of teams, and one of them, which I cared a lot about, was being torn apart because of resourcing changes. We needed six more weeks for a project we really wanted to see through, but management was telling us that we needed to disband immediately.

And that almost killed me. The nurse said I had lost so much blood that I was about two minutes away from irreversible organ and brain damage. Upon arriving in the emergency room, I needed four simultaneous blood transfusions just to avoid immediate death, and a total of around 8 over the course of the night keep me alive.
You Feel Achey And Sore
If you think about how you hold your body when you’re stressed â raised shoulders, clenched jaw, stiff back â then it makes total sense why soreness can occur. This is especially true if you internalize all your stress, Dr. Scott Schreiber tells me. When you do, it can lead to tension headaches and pain in other parts of your body. If you find yourself waking up and worrying or ruminating over things, it could be a sign of anxiety or depression, says Dr. Colgan. After a long day, sleep should come easy and getting into bed should finally be a time when you can shut your brain off. If you feel tired but have a difficult time falling asleep, its possible you have stress-related fatigue.
What to do: Talk to your doctor if this is regular occurrence. Discuss whether your chronic stress may have led to depression, says Dr. Colgan. When youre not sleeping well, everyday annoyances might make you feel even more overwhelmed and frustrated because youre more vulnerable. A tired body is not well prepared to cope with stressful situations and ward off illness, says Tuit. Cutting back on caffeinated and alcoholic beverages and increasing exercise can also improve sleep patterns, she says.

If you experience throbbing or feel pressure anywhere on the head or temple area, theres a good chance its a tension or stress headache, says Dr. Colgan. Oftentimes people point to particular troubles in their life that might be causing this pain, but lifestyle might be to blame instead. Keep in mind, if your head pain feels like a migraine headache, the worst headache of your life, or a headache that wakens you from sleep, those are signs of a dangerous health problem. You should visit a doctor immediately, advises Dr. Colgan.
What to do: When stress is the cause of your headache, the easiest thing to say is, have less stress in your life. But that advice itself is stressful, says Dr. Colgan. Knowing what your headaches coming from is helpful therapy. People oftentimes feel worse worrying and trying to figure out what the cause could be. So knowing its not some serious health problem may make a person feel better. Sometimes the most effective way a doctor can treat a patient is to teach them about their symptoms, says Dr. Colgan.
Remember That Time Is Precious
Another important mental shift to make has to do with time. In particular, the realization that time is a precious resource that we cannot get back.
How you spend the moments of your day is reflected in how you use your time. You can, of course, spend your time worrying and stressing about little things that wont matter tomorrow or next week. Or you can instead choose to spend it in a more efficient way focusing on making the most of every situation.
Whenever you feel yourself getting overwhelmed by the circumstances of your life, take a moment to ask yourself the following questions:
Is it worth getting emotionally riled up about this?
Whats the emotional cost of indulging in this?
Whats the opportunity cost? What could I miss out on as a result?
How else could I potentially interpret these events?
How could I interpret them in a way that makes me feel good about myself and about my life?
Given this, whats a more effective response I could make in this situation?
How could I approach this situation in a more lighthearted way?
How else could I spend my time right now?
Remember, that it all comes down to the interpretations you make. If youre getting stressed or anxious about something, then its because you have interpreted those circumstances in a particular way. Choose instead to interpret them differently in a more carefree and lighthearted way, and you will quickly shift how you think and subsequently how you respond to the situation at hand.

I can usually handle it well when I plan and can see the end. What pushes me to the edge, though, is all the little things that pop up during that time. 1. Panic Attacks
A sensation of feeling totally and utterly out of control of your entire body . Breathing exercises are very important when it comes to ease a panic attack. If its possible, go somewhere quiet and where you are alone, place a hand on your chest and one on your heart and breath deeply in and out of the nose.
This type of breathing is, in fact, a yogic breathing method but it works wonders for people suffering from a panic attack.
2. Racing Thoughts
These cause us to lose focus on the task at hand. Whether you are at work or simply at home cooking or having a conversation, racing thoughts can totally disrupt our mind. A great way to stop this is to move away from any electronic, take a pen and paper and make a list of five things youd like to accomplish in that day.
It may be work or home related, but by breaking a big task down into smaller chunks it makes us feel like we are in control and the project is manageable.
3. Muscle Tightness
Tightening our muscles at the thought of a stressful event can cause us to put pressure on our muscles and joint which can be painful. Another yogic exercise is to clench all the muscles for one breath in and then release them on the exhale.
This should be repeated for at least ten breaths. Another exercise is to inhale and clench one part of your body for five seconds and then release the breath. It will help to relax the muscles.
4. Stomach aches
To ease your digestive system, try a tea containing ginger or peppermint.
